SIM Contract Cancellation

I took out a new sim only deal with Virgin. Within the cooling off period I called them to cancel and they acknowledge this. I had been on the phone with them for a while (about another media matter) and couldn't hold on any longer to speak to their cancellations dept.
I didn't call them back, however.
My position is I communicated my cancellation of contract to them (an officer of the corp) and see this as ending the contract. They admit that I did communicate this to them.
They say I have to buy them out of the remainder of the contract.
Does anyone know the actual legal position here?

So you didn’t actually speak to the cancellations department or have the person who originally answered the call process and confirm the cancellation?
Sounds like dodgy legal ground, slightly akin to going to the head office and telling the doorman or receptionist.====0 -
<they acknowledge this >
How did they ??
<<couldn't hold on any longer to speak to their cancellations dept.>>( if you had cancelled why would you need to speak to them )
So you did not cancel .
Legal postition is you have not cancelled just told someone and then actually failed to cancel ( see above )and also failed to call back .
Officer of the corp sounds like a doorman .0 -
Only the cancellations dept can cancel a contract, no other dept has access to that system.
If you didn't talk to them then the contract wasn't cancelled.0
