How much to pay up front for flooring?

I'm not certain of the correct terms but some companies have money behind them(capital?), so they can afford to purchase the equipment and charge you after the work is complete. We had our bathroom refitted and this is the builder/plumber we used.
The initial quote person wanted us to purchase the materials, and pay 50% of labour to the labourer on first day. And 50% of labour on completion. We didn't go with his as anything could happen/cowboy builders disappears or don't do the work to standard. Some people will not have the capital behind them to offer this, but unfortunately too many channel 5 documentaries on cowboy builders have tarnished them , get other quotes and see what other floor laying people/companies can quote offer before deciding.0 -
Thanks for this. The company has been going for some 40+ years so I would have thought they'd have the capital behind them. I questioned it and the reply I got from the Sales Director was 'we must be doing a good job'. I still find it hard to believe that people would pay over 90% of the total cost up front. I also offered to pay 70% upfront to cover materials, just not labour!I'm not certain of the correct terms but some companies have money behind them(capital?), so they can afford to purchase the equipment and charge you after the work is complete. It cuts both ways.
Some clients pay late / refuse to pay and companies want to avoid bad debtors.

You did get more than one quote didn't you??Hi All
We have just got an order confirmation through for some wood flooring in our new home.
The total price is £4,707.60 (inc VAT) and the payment schedule is as below;
Deposit: £947.60
Commencement of Installation: £3,310
Completion Payment: £450
They seem to want a lot of money up front which we are not sure is correct? Should it not be about 50% or something? Or is that just for builders? I’m just not sure where they have plucked the figures from!
The company is well established and they did the floors in my parents’ house so I know the quality of work/service is good. Not sure if we should try and negotiate only paying 50%?
ThanksIt's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
Just pointing out that a big electrical job/rewire is 90% labour as wire is pretty cheap. The flooring is obviously weighted a lot more to the parts rather than labour.0
