iPhone 5 automatically switches off when charged 50%

When iPhone 5 reaches 50%, it automatically switches off. It does switch on again.
In Settings > General > Date & Time, Set Automatically is turned on.
Is this likely to be a battery or a software problem? Any help appreciated!

Battery. Common problem with older iPhones. If you take it to an Apple shop they can test if it is the battery.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
