Naive Question About Contracts

I have just passed the 12 month mark of a 12 month Virgin Mobile contract I took out last year for the first time which I was paying £30 a month for.I have not been in contact with Virgin to "discuss" a better deal from now on due to family problems but I remember it drops to £24 a month automatically if I do not request a new phone. My question is do you think I am automatically re-contracted for another 12 months or can I now cancel at any point with say 30 days notice? Also can I still ring up and get put through to retentions to try for a better deal?Told you they were maybe naive questions but this was the first pay monthly contract I have taken out after 6 years or so on PAYG.Thanks in advance!!

At the end of the contract, you do only need to give 30 days notice. Always give it in writing and send it in by Recorded Delivery.

Dont have any experience with Virgin Retentions, but as with the other Networks, they are more likely to offer a decent deal than normal CS.

I would also make a call and confirm the line rental drop, with regards to mobile phones, things that benefit you rarely happen smoothly.

  • Hi
After you have completed your minimum term you are out of commitment. Your tariff will continue as is or will change to the deal as agreed when you first took it out.
You will not go back into a new commitment until you either get a new handset or take up a new offer.

    Hope this clarifies things.

If I do give Virgin 30 days notice, when is the best time as I do not want to be cut off and still pay for the month. Is it just after or just before a bill ??
  • You always pay a months line rental in advance, so if you gave 30 days notice to cancel, once it has disconnected, they should send you a final bill. If the bill is in credit, just call them and get them to refund the amount back to your account. Billing dates are usually a few days after your commitment date, so it wil probably end up that they will owe you a credit.

Simply ask for you PAC code, you then have 30 days to use it, this way you can negotiate safe in the knowledge that if negotiations fail, you have already started the 30 days countdown.

You will usually be charged pro-rata for any unused time.
