What can cause a missed period?

This sounds like a worrying statement to me. It sounds like maybe the dieting is becoming a bit too serious. If you are becoming very obsessed about what you eat and your kcal intake and exercise, it might be wise to see your GP. Dieting can get out of hand. Weight wise you may not necessarily be of a low weight to get to the point where the food/weight is controlling you, rather than you controlling it.
I don't think that you will have caused any lasting damage in having missed a period. However if it has been caused through dieting excessively and you do not change this, and your periods don't come back then its a problem.
If stress is behind it, then I don't think there's much to be worried about other than the fact your stressed, and maybe storing out why your are stressed.0 -
Stress! i've been a year now and haven't visited the doctor as this is utter bliss!:D
I agree it's nice not having a period but at the same time there's a part of me that thinks why. You should probably see your GP if it's been a year
I currently work full-time Mon-Sat and always try to keep Sunday's free to have a lazy day and catch up on sleep etc.
isme, where do you think you know me from? I realise that I probably shouldn't continue with the special K diet but the thought of going back to 'normal' eating scares me as I know it will mean putting on weight. Even putting on 1lb terrifies me.
I'm not what I would describe as 'thin' I'm about 9st and a size 10/12. I suppose I am a little obsessive about calories. At work I won't eat a biscuit 'cos it would mean another 70 calories. Colleagues think it's ridiculous but to me it isn't.
I do feel bad though that my so-called diet could have caused a delayed/missed period.

Can you get along to SW or WW or something? Maybe if you had a group supporting you, the 'fear' of putting on 1 lb would be reduced. You possibly need to be looking at a weight you can maintain easily and sensibly, with periods. Not wanting to worry you even more, but I think osteoporosis is a worry if you don't have periods as often as you should at your age.
BTW, I'm not saying 10/12 is 'thin' these days, but it certainly ain't fat!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hi Razorbladekisses and Tosca: Are you both getting enough protein in your diet as you need the iron, and enough vitamin C to help you absorb the iron? By all means avoid the biscuits etc., but you need to make sure that you have enough protein and trace minerals or you'll become anaemic and possibly suffer from other problems caused by your body not having what it needs to run properly.
The odd missed period can be ignored as lots of external and temporary factors could cause this, but going for as long as a year without one does indicate that something's not right and I would urge you to speak to your GP. I'm menopausal and quite relish the months without periods, so know what you mean Tosca, but also realise that there are other things that I have to be careful about now as the drop in oestrogen means that I won't have the same protection against eg heart attacks and osteoporosis.Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)

I'm not good in group situations so therefore don't feel like I'd benefit from weight watchers. However, thank you for the suggestion.
Thanks again to everyone who has replied.-->♥<-- Sugar Coated Owl -->♥<--

also WW and SW are not exactly money saving are they!! earlyer on in the year i too had a missed period, after 7 pregnancy tests and one done via blood test that all came back negative, i was sent for a scan, this revealed no abnormalities and the consultant put it down to a hormone imbalance. I was 9 weeks late with the period then it re-appeared and only then it was very light0

Well, possibly not, but I thought RBK might benefit from some regular input, and reassurance, and ideas about how much she needs to eat and what she could eat. As she's not a groupy kind of person it's not such a good idea, so I'll repeat the suggestion of the "I wanna ... lose weight" group over on the "I wanna ..." board - I'm presuming they're still there!also WW and SW are not exactly money saving are they!!Signature removed for peace of mind0
