Bear in mind that September is hurricane season for the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, South and East Coast of America.

Just what I was about to say - avoid anything around that area in September. October that time would be better if you're flexible. I would recommend Florida and not just for the theme parks, there's so much to do, Everglades, historical town St Augustine, Naples, St Pete Beach, Crystal River, Palm Beach, Miami.etc

You could even combine going to Miami for instance with a trip to somewhere in the Caribbean as there are direct flights between Miami and most Caribbean islands that have an airport. (I want to do this at some point).

I would recommend South Africa as well, but January/February time is better for that.

Another vote for South Africa though it's not really a beach holiday.

September is a great month for Kruger and still low enough risk for malaria that tablets aren't recommended. And a good chance of seeing Southern right whales out of Hermanus, just a couple of hours from Cape Town.

Yes, it's early spring in CT so the weather can be variable but a good season for the spring flowers and the Garden Route is always a couple of degrees warmer than CT itself. Try combing Cape Town, Garden Route and a safari for a superb holiday experience with something for everyone of every age.

How about a US road trip?

For example, the Los Angeles > Pacific Coast Highway > San Francisco > Yosemite National Park > Death Valley > Las Vegas > Los Angeles loop would have provide a great variety of cities and scenery of different types.

If everyone likes the national parks, then the Grand Circle would be a good choice. Las Vegas > Zion > Bryce Canyon > Capitol Reef > Arches and Canyonlands > Black Canyon of the Gunnison > Mesa Verde > Grand Canyon > Las Vegas.

If everyone wants a slower and gentler pace, then Washington DC > Shenandoah National Park > Blue Ridge Parkway > Great Smoky Mountains National Park > Chattanooga or Charlotte or Atlanta.

Obviously there are umpteen other possible routes.

    Jeez!
You now have to apply in person at one of the visa centres.

That's a revist to China off the list. :(

Yes, it's a shame, but not something I for one am prepared to do, apparently you can't make an appointment you have to join a queue and if you don't get seen that day tough.....I guess it's one way to cut down on tourism....
Shame I saw a lovely cruise to China and Japan but hey ho, lots of other place to go......

    Getting some dubious advice here....

Caribbean - September is hurricane season but you will likely get a cheap deal. Hurricane season sounds horrific but in reality 90% of the time you just get glorious weather. There is a risk of wind and rain but almost everywhere carries that risk to some degree.

I've been in hurricane season lots of times and I've never seen one. We have seen unsettled weather - but that was in May - supposedly outside hurricane season!

Me neither. I won't go to any country that makes it difficult or really expensive to get a visa.

My DH would love to go to St Petersburg but it's the Russian visa system that's putting us off too. What made us particularly cross that during last year's World Cup, you didn't need a visa having a ticket for a match was enough.

Incidentally, we could go to St Petersburg without the hassle as there are different arrangements for cruises. Not sure if that applies to China though. It might be worth checking out.
