Plastic ones can be cut to length. I used three cable ties on each length.

I suspect you may be overthinking things slightly!

I am 100% confident they'll fit where you need them to.

Communicate with your lovely neighbours/ ask their advice. Any of us can love birds/ cats/ dogs/ children yet understand there are negative aspects (stray poop).

Installing hardcore metal spikes 'out of the blue' is far more likely to upset your neighbours than a gentler option that they are expecting because you spoke to them.
