Most reliable speed test

Is there a broadband speed test out there that is actually reliable.

I have been having issues with my broadband speed for what seems like forever but when I run speedtests they seem highly variable.

BT's offerings (both BT and Openreach) are a joke, varying between 9mbs and 200mbs (this is on a line that should get around 70mbs not FTTP).

The BT and Openreach speed testers can give bad results when run under certain browsers. Try an alternative browser first.

This site is reliable and I use it as first choice https://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

No speed test is reliable over wifi.
I find the BT wholesale test and further diagnostics the best . Matched via OR tester at the box.

https://www.speedtest.net/ if testing a wired connection. There's to many variables if using mobile data or WiFi.

Most variability is users ignoring the instructions: No wifi/no powerline, disable firewall/anti-virus or any apps that can access the connection, VPN/proxy & no other users

Some ISP's may be tempted to prioritise traffic to popular speed test websites so people always see a good connection speed.

So a good speed test is: https://fast.com/ because it uses the Netflix servers so ISP's are less likely to prioritise this traffic due it's very high volume and if they do it's good for people who watch Netflix so win win.

The Open Reach engineer recommended that one to me!

Browser based speed testers are often erroneous. You also have to consider that your ISP is only responsible for your traffic within their network. If you test against a server that's hosted elsewhere, then from the point the traffic is handed off, your ISP has no control over what happens to it.

Up to a point. Bigger/Premium ISPs usually have better peering arrangements and crucially CDNs cited in their data centres. This make a big difference for many types of content
