Has anyone been to turkey?

Fethiye is a friendly working town, surrounded by glorious scenery. Tourism blends in seamlessly.
Easy to navigate as its on the flat, easy to get around to nearby resort areas by inexpensive dolmus [shared minibus].
I didnt think much of Calis Beach, or Hisoranu.
Much prefer the Bodrum Peninsula....but that's personal choice.0 -

I’d agree, but I like both the lagoon at Olu Deniz and the Bodrum Peninsular, pretty equally.0 -
I've been going to Turkey every year for 30+ years and I love it. I know Fethiye and while it is a large working town it does have a good waterfront and nice places nearby. Boat trips from the harbour make a lovely day out.
I really love Turkish food and the exchange rate of the TL (Turkish Lira) to the £ is very good at the moment. Obviously, check reviews before choosing accommodation. You might want to go self catering. Fethiye has an enormous market and fruit and veg is very cheap.
How long are you planning to be there and when? It's very hot in the summer (we go in June and it's hot enough then) so you'd need air con.
Would you be able to recommend any SC places to stay? I have worried about Turkey not being safe outside the hotel and considered AI for this reason, but you have inspired me to consider SC.
Is Fethiye one of those places where you get accosted by traders when you leave the accomodation?0 -

Turkey is very safe, you can go out and about.
But you do get hassled. Not like Eqypt where it’s full on, but it’s constant asking you to buy, to look, to come inside.
Some people find it very wearing, I’m ok with it for a while, but it would put me off going self catering to Turkey as I wouldn’t want to be bothered every time I went out to eat - 3 times a day!0 -
I found that worse in places like the Canaries, you can't walk down a street in the evening without people trying to drag you into their restaurant/bar.Turkey is very safe, you can go out and about.

But at least it's not as bad as it used to be a decade or 2 ago when the timeshare touts were the scurge of almost all the Spanish resorts, they were unbelievable, not surprised as they apparently got about £50-100 for every couple they persuaded to go to a presentation! North Africa was a doddle compared to them!0 -

What do you mean by 'safe'?
Is it just hassle from traders or are you concerned about muggers, kidnappers, terrorists?

Bear in mind their high inflation rate. I got told the exchange rate is very good the first time I went, by someone who'd been a couple of years before. Yes you got far more lira for every pound, but it bought you the same.I really love Turkish food and the exchange rate of the TL (Turkish Lira) to the £ is very good at the moment.0 -

When we first went to Turkey in the late 1980s, the exchange rate was 1000 (old) TL to £1.00.
The following year, the exchange rate was 2000 (old) TL to £1.00.
Stuff that had cost 1000 TL the first year, cost 2000 TL the second.

And it was about 200,000 first time I went! When we first went to Turkey in the late 1980s, the exchange rate was 1000 (old) TL to £1.00.

All the resturants all had prices in GBP or Western currencies, so they didn't have to keep updating them! Also they preferred GBP for payment, at market rates, because they preferred a currency that wouldn't depreciate before they banked it :rotfl:0 -
