I'd put the money into the existing car.

"Headlights discolouring" will just need the UV lens coating cleaning off. There's plenty of cheap products on the market to do that.

As for underneath - a good clean-up and wax will stop it getting any worse, once any current rot has been sorted.

Agree with this; I'd rather keep the Toyota than spend £7-9K.

Of course if they simply want a new car go for it, but those "reasons" for needing to get rid sound a bit weak.

Plenty of life in that old dog yet, (and IMHO a nicer car to own than the replacements you listed). :)
  • If you must change your car then I would suggest looking at a Hyundai i20.

2 years old with mileage around 12000 sells on the forecourt for around £7500.

Excellent build quality and very reliable. Climbing in the JD Power ratings year on year.

And worth diddly squat after a few years

I have a 61 plate I20 1250cc, bought it 2 years ago off a family friend and it’s been faultless, £30 year tax , 45 mpg, only thing is it has zero street cred, paint work is not the best, rusts very quickly with any chips to the paint, and chips are common as paint so thin, but it’s completely dependable and robust, 103000 on the clock now and not missed a beat, also is cam chain not a belt.

Based on what? I've just bought a 2-year old i20 and having spent lots of time looking at used prices this doesn't appear to be true. If anything they seem to hold their value fairly well until the mileage gets high, like any other car.

Well rated for reliability and safety, decent fuel economy, 5 year transferable unlimited mileage warranty...

How much would it cost to get the underneath treated by a mechanic?

The plan seems to be keep the Corolla for my dad to get to and from work but buy one of the other cars as a nicer/newer car. They are considering the Mazda, Auris and Fiesta but not sure which...

They need something that will be easy to get in and out of like a Kia Soul.

Mazdas rust, Fiestas get stolen all the time,(if the engine hasn't blown up- google ecoboost failure), so that leaves the Auris, which is their preferred brand, just don't expect it to be as well made as the old one.

It is true- they really don't make 'em like they used to. (Applies to any brand)

    I'd keep the Corolla ;)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Bit of an exaggeration, I've had 2 Fiestas from new since 2012 and neither of them have been stolen, and the current Ecoboost one hasn't blown up.

Auris is a nice car all around, except for a horrbible automatic gearbox. Definitely a car you buy with your head, not the heart.

Not driven the others, though relatives have the Fiesta and it seems nice as a passenger.
