Which of these cars? Any experiences?

Hi all,

I’m helping my parents (late 50s) find a new car to replace their beloved 16 year old Toyota Corolla with very low miles. They are looking for something that will hopefully be nearly as reliable!

We have been looking at cars 2015 onwards for around £7-9,000. The Mazda 2, Fiesta and Auris have been shortlisted so far. They did consider the Yaris but the interior is a bit cheap looking so discounted it.

Has anybody had experiences with any of these cars or any recommendations? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

It’s just getting on a bit. Our mechanic advised that the underneath will need some attention soon so might be time for a change.

Ive owned a first generation Auris which was reliable (other than being diesel) and have test driven a Yaris hybrid. If i needed a bigger car than my current an Auris hybrid would be my first stop.
Just fyi, just this year Toyota reused the Corrola name on its replacement for the Auris which you can buy brand new.

They do love their Toyotas and the Corolla has been pretty much faultless. It’s just showing it’s age a little now... headlight glass is discolouring and may need some welding for next MOT. Shame really as it’s a great car but they would like something that looks a bit smarter/up to date.

Thanks. They have tried the hybrids which are lovely and quiet in electric mode but what a racket the CVT box makes if you put your foot down a bit. This put them off quite a bit. Auris does seem like the natural upgrade.

If they are ok with driving manual then i would recomend a skoda fabia or skoda rapid manual not a dsg, we have had 3 fabias in the house now and dad who is nearly 70 has one 1.2 petrol
People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

I bought an Auris in a hurry after my previous car was written off. It is a very boring car but I love it. Very reliable and economical. In five years, apart from routine servicing stuff, the only problem has been leaks from the rear light clusters and I had to replace the gaskets. I have done just over 50,000 miles in it and bought it when it had 16,000 on the clock. It's a 1.4 and still returns 45 mpg. Ideally, the boot would be bigger.

I'd put the money into the existing car.

"Headlights discolouring" will just need the UV lens coating cleaning off. There's plenty of cheap products on the market to do that.

As for underneath - a good clean-up and wax will stop it getting any worse, once any current rot has been sorted.
