Help!

Well.... here goes

I'm well aware I'm completely screwed but I have no idea where to start.

I'm currently on long term sick from work, husband isn't working.
I haven't actually been paid that amount for a while...

I've added debts into the unsecured bit too. That's his and mine.

I think you need two plans - one hopefully short term to deal with your current lack of income and then one longer term to deal with the debts. In the short term you can't afford to pay anything to the debt. As a couple you need more income, there is little point balancing the books on your normal wage while you are getting sick pay only. Are you both eligible for any benefits? Is there a reason your husband is out of work and not getting any benefits?

Council tax - is this over 12 instalments, if not ask council if you can do this.

Internet - what are you getting for £60 a month? This can be cut right down if not in contract

Groceries - £300 is a little high for 3, can you make savings here, try moving down a brand.

Can you go SIM only on the mobiles?

SERIOUSLY CONSIDER talking to Stepchange and getting either a DRO or DMP - yes, your credit rating will be shot but you will feel so much better.
  • Is the £300 groceries for three like D_M_E states as it says 2 adults in your SOA? Either for 2 or 3 this is high. That's good in a way though as it's one place you can save some money.
    Savings as of April 2023 Savings account - £26460.50(14474.88)Current account - £2140.24(4576.79)Total - £28600.74(19051.67) £1010 (£65pm CS/BS) £250 CS/BS/JS

I have in the last few hours applied for UC, in the hope that he might attend a meeting this time...

The council tax is already over 12 installments, that payment is inclusive of a little debt from last year, when the payments weren't made by my husband.

I have just cut this down with Virgin to £50. This is for the TV, phone, and the broadband. I have 200mb broadband, but it is necessary, the lower would begin to throttle with the amount used.

Groceries... this will take some changes, it's not me that does the shopping usually, but whilst I'm not at work, I will be taking this on, try to make it work I guess.

I have considered Stepchange, just not quite been well enough to get on the phone yet.

While you are off work long-term sick, have you considered doing paid online surveys and market research? I earn up to £200/month additional income doing surveys and can recommend it. :) It is not a solution, but it would provide you with a little extra income.

Do you have anything you can recommend?

I am signed up to a load of different agencies. But the most enjoyable (and well-paid) surveys are from Prolific Academic. I also normally get £50/month from PopulusLive.

Have a look at the article linked below as it is where I started:

Your total debt is £38,651.99 and neither of you are working.

You can't get a DRO as your debts total over £20k. Sounds like bankruptcy might be worth looking into.

Is there a reason why your husband isn't working?

How much are you actually receiving in sick pay per month? You need to redo the SOA with that figure, and not one that you used to get paid to get a truly accurate picture.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look, when I'm awake... not very often at the moment. :rotfl:

The majority of the £39k is down to his loan and his overdraft, so my personal debt is under £20k.

At the moment, I'm not sure what I will be receiving, I have had one pay of around £900, but that includes the 3 days I had to stand to, plus some hours unpaid. I'll know more when I get paid in a couple of weeks.

He doesn't work because he doesn't want to (long story, but I'm an idiot, and he takes advantage of that)

    Thanks for your replies :-)

I’m sorry but he going to have to get his bum into gear. I wouldn’t be with someone who doesn’t want to work and gets yourself into debt and cause so much worry.

You say he didn’t attend a benefits meeting. So why would he be likely to go to this one.

He needs to step up. Is he the one buying all the stuff to get you both into so much debt. How have you managed
To get into this debt when he doesn’t work.

Sounds like he is sponging off you.

Sorry if I’m harsh but I think it needs to be said
