How do I know if a tyre is good quality

Just had four new tyres. I took it to a local garage. And he told me they are £60 each. I asked him if they are decent quality he said yes. Looking at what he has put on they are called Farroad FRD16. Anyone know if these are decent quality tyres?

Ask a search engine. Chinese budget brand.

Also are available from about £33 depending on size, so plus fitting I suspect you overpaid.

If it is a brand is unknown then you would not rely on them being (or even expect them to be) good quality.
  • In a nutshell you have been ripped off, they are general cheap budgets.

Depends what you mean by 'decent quality' really.

As said, it depends on the size of them as to whether you got them at a decent price, they vary from under £30 for a very small car to up to over £70 a tyre for an mpv/4x4.

Fair enough but how many of the general public have heard of Vredestein for example, or Gislaved? (Both excellent brands IMO).

Why not use Tigar if they are owned by Michelin, or Matador which is owned by Continental?

The globalised world is a bit of a minefield.

It can be, yes. Which is how these by-the-container Chinese off-brands can be so bloody infuriating. But a quick google says everything.

Gislaved - Swedish, specialising in tyres for snow and ice.
Vredestein - Dutch.Long-established Western European manufacturers.

    Matador - Slovak.
    Tigar - Slovenian.
Long-established ex-Communist manufacturers, now budget-brands for big names.

    And then there's Farroad...

I accept your view that they are and you know that because you have a familiarity with the brands. Without specific brand knowledge I would not make any assumptions of expectations in respect of quality of unless it was a 'big-brand' name.

Worried now that I have been ripped off. I have a long motorway drive tomorrow. Are they safe?

They'll be fine. All tyres sold in the UK must adhere to British Standards so there not going to be unsafe, they're just not going to be as good at the limits in comparison.

Safe? Yes. So long as you drive accordingly. They will be relatively limited in grip, so don't corner hard, brake hard or accelerate hard. Especially if the road's wet.
