Decent mid range tyre

Why the best on rear?, front wheel drive and steering on front, the rears only follow, the a-e on wet grip and fuel economy seems misleading to me as the budget tyres are rated similarly, on the autobild tests the maxxis hp5 is actually rated better than the Avon zv7 so maybe I’ll go with the tyre garage opinion, after all they sell them all day long.0

So buy a set of four...
https://www.camskill.co.uk/m54b0s16p0/
Out of that lot - Toyo, Vredestein, Uniroyal, Avon - all low £50s each.
They're the bargains - when you consider the real cheap and nasties are squeezing in under £40, the bulk of the ali-baba-by-the-containerload ditchfinders are in the low-mid £40s, and you've still got utter chod up the low £70s - where the Contis and Michs start...
Now consider that they last 25k miles, for the sake of argument.
Even £75 each is just one-third of a penny per mile. How much is fuel? How much is the total running cost, including depreciation/insurance/fuel/etc...?
Even top quality tyres are ridiculously cheap. Ditchfinder rubbish is a total false economy.
4 tyres!! I’m not that rich, why bin perfectly good tyres?0 -
It's because most people can deal with a degree of understeer, but not oversteer. I'd rather have the front sliding a bit than the back stepping out. Put your best tyres on the rear, for FWD and RWD cars.ShandyAndy wrote: »Why the best on rear?, front wheel drive and steering on front, the rears only follow0 -

Precisely so.0 -

"Perfectly good" in terms of wear, yes... If you'd be scared to fit them on the front, they're hardly "perfectly good" in my book.
Aylesbury Duck replied before i had chance to, but is absolutely correct - on either FWD or RWD you want your best on the back.0 -
I thought you said the other pair were "cheap and nasty"? That's why I suggested four...ShandyAndy wrote: »4 tyres!! I’m not that rich, why bin perfectly good tyres?
The general advice to put the better pair on the back is because with your average FWD car, you will naturally respond better to understeer than to oversteer. You will notice wheelspin and back off earlier, before the back lets go. You will notice the ABS kicking in and back off earlier, before the back lets go.0 -

Unless they don't have enough grip... There's your answer.0 -
Falken rated 3rd in the 2019 tyre test and £60 each, think that’s what I’ll go with!0

Is this to promote understeer rather than oversteer, because you can't steer into oversteer to correct it, or is there some more arcane reason? If they're that bad then I'd be doubly concerned about having them on the back - you should always have your better tyres on the backProud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
To correct understeer you need to turn the steering wheel more, which is a natural reaction if you find yourself going wide on a corner. With oversteer, you have to apply opposite lock, which is not nearly as intuitive. For the vast majority of drivers (and I mean 99.999%), an understeering car is a far safer prospect.onomatopoeia99 wrote: »Is this to promote understeer rather than oversteer, because you can't steer into oversteer to correct it, or is there some more arcane reason?
FWD is nowhere near as much fun as RWD on a wet roundabout, but is far safer for most of us.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0
