How do I format a cell so that
if cell contains negative number then adjacent cell says in debit in red but if the cell has a positive number then adjacent cell says credit?
using cells h210 and i210

In i210 add the formula
=IF(H210<0,"debit","credit")
and then use conditional formatting format only cells that contain cell value equal to debit, set font to red.0 -

You're aware that there is a preset number format which displays negative numbers in red (Format > Cells > Negative Numbers)?
Apply that to H210 and delete cell. I210?
Simplifies both sheet and screen.0
