Getting money back for unused broadband?

I've recently realised that I have been paying for a broadband contract with Sky that I haven't used for over a year (I know, I also find it ridiculous that I didn't realise!) I managed to cancel my contract with the broadband team, but they said that I should contact their refunds team to discuss the money side of things.

I know getting money back for it is a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone has been through something similar, has any suggestions or has any advice on how I might be able to get some back?

They won't refund something they provided you with. Your choice not to use it!

Words fail me. Has the OP not looked at their Bank Statements, seen a payment to Sky and wonder what its for when they don't have Sky TV, Phone or anything else Sky? Why has it taken over a year for you to notice?

How'd you manage that these days you port over via OR to a new supplier when you switch. (unless your on old tech or just left a dd running)

They ought to be able to see you've not established a login session during the period.

    Such a helpful response! 😮
So the more helpful response i.e. the one you want to hear is yes, of course you'll get a full refund, plus interest, plus some compo

Not at all, I understand completely how ridiculous this idea seems (who doesn't notice?). I was purely interested to see if someone else had experienced anything similar or if anyone had any suggestions.

To be honest, poor mental health plays into it more that poor technology!

    Thank you for that response.

Talk to their refunds have the dates of the two accounts to hand so you can say when you swapped over.

If you had health issues as to why you didn't notice then by all means say that. They must have to deal with cases where ppl go into care homes or hospital and no one notices an active account.

I'm very tired but i'm still struggling to see how the handover didn't cancel your old bb. the automatic handover is supposed to tidy this all up!

Thank you, this is very helpful. I'll mention the health issues and see if there is anything they can do. I'm completely not expecting anything, but I was interested in seeing if anyone else had any similar experiences (obviously not everyone is as daft as me!)

I didn't do an automatic handover - it was my first time renting and my first time getting broadband after university. Tbh, I wasn't aware that you could do those kind of things (the place I moved already had a provider) and I've moved another time since then. Yay London renting!

Realise it's been handled very poorly on my part, but I have cancelled it now. So no doubt will just cut my losses!
  • You'd be lucky if they gave you a voucher or any sort of small kick-back on future payments. Most broadband providers are quite strict with their policies.

We've had Virgin broadband in the house for years and every year I spend one morning/evening calling them up to reduce the rate, last year due to loyalty we got £10 off every month for the coming 12 months.

I'd advise you to stick all your payments into a calendar on your pc so you know when they're going out, the last thing we need is a direct debit which we are unaware of, unfortunately most people do not regularly check their main current account they pay bills from.

    Good luck
