The last time they held
Mine for
Security checks they never asked for anything nor
Did they contact me . I just happened to
Look and see it was issued . Personally I think it’s a ploy just to hold
Money longer to squeeze that bit f£@@£:g more out of interest in the bank ... that’s just me tho 😂😂😂
HMRC cannot claim interest on balances held for potential repayments.
The security checks cover a multitude of things, though there is no list of what these are which is provided to the public or telephone advisers. There is a very good reason for this and in the main it's to prevent fraud and maintain the ethos of self assessment, I.e. for the taxpayer to complete their return honestly and to the best of their ability.
The only people who know what the security check triggers are other than random selection, are those officers who process the checks.
Some of the triggers may be set depending on specific projects that HMRC are looking at within that relevant tax year, or where certain patterns have been found in organised fraudulent activity.
There are 2 main peaks when the highest volume of returns are received, the first 2 weeks from 6 April and last 2 weeks prior to 31 January.
In these periods because a high number of returns are received a high number of returns are selected.
The more returns selected the longer the timescale to deal with them all as officers get through them asap.
Whilst people want their repayments asap its also important to remember that part of HMRC's remit is to protect the public purse, and whilst it's a pain and sometimes feels harsh, it's a necessary process to not only help weed out the few who attempt to cheat the system, but also help to highlight to customers if genuine mistakes/errors are found.
It's as much about education as it is compliance in some cases.
But, as stated above, just because a return is selected does not mean it's wrong/right/fraudulent etc etc. Its either been selected randomly or has hit certain triggers.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Well I submitted my return on the 6th requested refund on the 9th had bank payment pending on my account until the 18th when it changed to bank payment then received the money in the bank on 22nd or 23rd which ever was the Tuesday. Few days later I realised I had not give the correct figures on my SA so amended it 29th and was due another refund requested refund 2 days later went to bank payment pending with the second amount then on Friday changed to bank payment 7th May. Hopefully I get the funds in the bank tomorrow then I can say I have had no issues what so ever with my return this is my first year self employed I filled my return myself no accountant or advisor.
