Ours was a tax mistake, we didn't have to send any paperwork or receipts. (weird IK).
The Hmrc call centres can't do anything, once its gone to checks.
I would phone them and ask who has it been past to, & if a letter a has been sent to you and when.
I would suggest make sure all your tax is paid correctly, & you havent made a mistake with your earnings, cause they know what you have earnt etc. These are the main reasons it gets picked up for security checks.
They will send you a letter with a contact number for a adviser, who tells you why it's been checked & want you need to do. Tbf they are brilliant.
If you do get a letter, phone them ASAP.

It’s supposed to be random however if you pay tax through CIS you’re more likely to be selected, the checks are to make sure what you’ve declared is what’s been paid etc0
