Problem with using Microsoft Lumia 435

I am having big problems using the above phone. My OH is going abroad for a couple of weeks, and I hoped to use this (her 2nd phone) to keep in contact via IMO.
However, I have mobility problems with my hands/fingers and I cannot seem to work the touch screen on the phone.
This morning she has tried to contact me twice, and although the phone is on, there are no messages or missed calls. We practiced with it last night in the house and the reception was very poor and the picture kept freezing (we do have a good wifi connection and it was on).
I have been reading up on this and it seems I am not alone in having problems using a touch screen phone.
Has anyone else had this and did they sort it out?:(

If you are on Android or apple, voice activation may help.

By the way, do you have a PC? Do you have difficulty of using that?
Your wife should be able to contact you with app like Skype or Facebook messager, etc

Yes, I have a desktop and laptop. She uses IMO, but I could suggest that she uses Skype or FB instead. The reception on the MS 435 is absolutely rubbish, she phoned me this morning and I just about managed to pick up the call, but the voice was incoherent and the picture kept freezing.
