Dented tins

A quick question. Should you eat food from a dented tin? Slight dents are ok I think but how dented does it need to be before you avoid it. Every week Tesco deliver me dented tins and I'm getting fed up of it now. Two of the tinned tomatoes weren't just slightly dented they were caved in !!!

May be an old wives tale, but i was told not to eat from a dented tin:confused:
  • !!!!!!, what difference does a dent make to the produce inside? The can is just a different shape.

Though if I kep getting dented tins (as the OP says) then I would probably have a moan.
    .....

  • Dents are nothing to worry about; what you need to look for is bulging tins, which indicates bacteria has caused the contents to go off, and that's thankfully pretty rare.

I was always told this too, something to do with the contents reacting with the lining of the tin.

Aside from the (separate) botulism issue, a dented tin can be impossible to get a can opener around.
    Good, clean fun.... :D

Well we wouldn't eat half aswell if it wasn't for Asdas whoops(reduced )section. Including dented tins.

I have never had any problems and with young children I really wouldn't use anything that I thought was dodgy.
How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?

Sometimes its easier to turn it upside down and open the bottom if its dented

    Hi Dotmatic,

There are some arguments for and against eating from dented tins on this recent thread:

Can i eat a tin of soup past its best before date?

When I did my basic food and hygiene award, we learnt that dents can sometimes damage the seal of the can and therefore allow bacteria in. We learnt that you shouldn't really use them.

I try and avoid really dented tins, especially with dents near the top, although the odd little bash doesn't bother me.
