Dented tins

Ok I posted this here as it is the old style boards and I thought you guys would have better knowledge.
My great gran, used to tell me never to buy dented tins and this has rubbed off on my gran. Also my gran detests me buying out of date food and says it is the way she was brought up.
Does any one know where this madness comes from. Wins in 09 = A vodka cocktail kit thing lol, £150 Amazon voucher.0 -
My gran always told me the same thing. Something to do with the tin lining being damaged and affecting the contents from memory. She also told me never to eat straight from the tin incase the fork damaged the tin lining. She obviousley never had cold baked beans straight from the tin. There may have been something in it years ago, but I don't think there is anything wrong with dented tins anymore.0

You should be careful with dented tins. If the laquer inside the tin gets damaged the food can start to eat it's way out of the tin (particularly acidic foods like tomatoes). Exposure to the air will make the food go off as in effect the tin is open. Tin cuts can be partucularly nasty too. Can you tell I used to work for the world's biggest can-maker:rotfl:?
I will add that as far as dented tins and out of date food are concerned, common sense works for me. If it smells OK and tastes OK it probably is OK. I haven't poisoned anyone yet:rotfl:.I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

There is a sound reason to possibly avoid dented tins, in that sometimes if it's not been sealed correctly and the food inside has gone off, it can create a vacum inside which can make the tin contract, so that it looks like it's dented. I personally won't buy a really dented tin (that looks like it's been crushed), but I will buy a cheap tin if it just looks like it's been dropped (ie it's just a bit bashed around the top).
As for out of date food, you technically shouldn't be able to buy it. You can buy reduced food that's about to go out of date, but as far as I'm aware a shop can't legally sell out of date produce (at least that's what I've been told from working in delis). I don't see anything wrong with buying yellow stickered food at all, food won't suddenly go bad at the stroke of midnight lol. I think a lot of people won't do it for 'snobby' reasons though, I know it's taken ages to get my OH out of that mindset0 -
Hi ZLS,
There was a previous discussion on dented tins so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

I dnt mind the dented tins I do check before I eat the contents though but you can some times get a dented tin cheap.
There is a shop I know of where I live that sells out of date food. It is declard on the signs and they are cheaper. My gran thinks that I am going to poison my dd lol but I dnt think I am going to go that. Wins in 09 = A vodka cocktail kit thing lol, £150 Amazon voucher.0 -

I'm cautious of dented cans because I wonder if the seal has gone and the contents may be bad. I give them a press and see if they're easy to squash or press another small dent in to with my fingers, which I take as a sign the seal is broken. Try the same with a few tins that you expect to be well sealed and you'll find a great difference in how easily, if at all, you can depress them.0
