Last week, MrsB had a card through the post

"here's your new card from Nat West for account ending 4567"

I didn't bother too much about it at first as we have four Nat West accounts, but, when I got round to checking ... none of our accounts end in 4567!

I phoned the number on the bottom of the letter and long story short, they confirmed that it was a scam.
I went into the local branch who told me that they had had 25 cases and that another branch had 45!!! The lady next door was in the exact same situation.

Two questions really, how can someone take out a card in MrsB's name without full details?
Will this have any effect on our (currently exemplary) credit score?

They'll have been able to provide sufficient details to pass the checks.

Once it is removed from her files, it will not be visible to lenders. Don't worry about the impact it has on her score.
  • Get the account closed.
Get the info removed from the credit files.

Forget your score as it will likely drop even further after all of this, but that's OK

I closed the account as soon as I realised it was a scam - we were only aware of it for 1/2 days

Such as? When I quoted Mrs' DOB, that didn't agree with the one they had.

    Two conflicting opinions here.

They aren't conflicting, the score is a novelty thing, while it may drop, the drop is irrelevant as it has no impact on your credit rating (how lenders see you). The score itself is just a fun thing you can look at as it goes up and down, lenders never see it.

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Such as the details required by the lender to process the application.

So you have an account ending in 4567 and have received a new card for it .... what is the problem?
Or is this a typing error and you mean NONE of your accounts ends in 4567?
Assuming the latter, what sort of card are we talking about here? The wording seems more appropriate to a debit card than a credit card and you don't specify anywhere if it is a debit card or credit card that you are talking about.
What about a PIN number for the card. Did you receive one? If not, this would imply that it was a replacement card for an existing account rather than a card for a new account.

Strange sort of 'scam'. Did NatWest really use the word 'scam'? How is this 'scam' supposed to work? What possible benefit would there be to the perpetrators to open bank/credit card accounts in various peoples names if the cards were to be sent to the correct addresses?

A very good question especially as you go to say that her DOB was incorrect. As your wife is an existing customer, their internal systems should have picked this up even if no credit check was carried out on her.
However, you don't say if it was a debit card or credit card and I suppose if it was a debit card for some sort of savings account that did not require a credit check it may have been possible, although the question of why their internal systems did not pick it up remains unanswered.
Perhaps more to the point, how did they manage to open accounts in the name of your wife, the name of your neighbour and at least 63 other people as well without having their full details!

    Forget the meaningless credit score.
With regard to what may appear on your credit files, worst case scenario would be a hard search and an opened and immediately closed account. Nothing much to be over concerned about. Assuming NatWest have accepted that the account was not opened by your wife, then these things should be removed.

You received a new card for an account that you already had?
Is that the so called scam, that someone was able to order a new card for you?

Sorry - my error (typo) - NONE of our accounts end in 4567
It was Visa Debit card - the PIN came the next day.

The branch told us to phone the fraud line, which we did.
Nat West are blaming theft from 'rural' postboxes although our neighbour lives up a drive 300yards long with a barking dog and CCTV
I think that the fraudster would be able to take out a £1K overdraft (all our current private Nat West accounts have that) and ... spend it ... 63 times!!!

    I hope that clarifies everything ... :o

I smell inside job, possibly at the local branch(es)? As mentioned, the default systems at natwest would be a "pooter says no" if things dont match, or at least a referral to the credit team, who would surely then get suspicious at the number of referrals from the same area (i doubt the team is that big, they normally aren't).
Edit: Although in hindsight it might equally be a software update at natwest thats left a big gaping gap in the KYC process.
Edit2: In which case, we'll read about it soon when news comes that the FCA has [STRIKE]funded this years bonuses[/STRIKE] fined them
