Are you switching to another BT-based provider, or to VM? Unless it's VM, the gaining supplier should be handling the switch, no need to discuss it with JL/Plusnet at all. If you request a disconnect, then a cease charge can be applied-it's in you t and c's.
If you have requested a disconnect, and your new provider is delayed, then you could lose the line and the number.Your new provider cannot change the provision date, because that is determined by Openreach, not by them.

I stand by what I have stated - I have never been charged by any provider for a switchover a day early. And if my new provider doesn't become active until midnight on the 17th technically my John Lewis contract will have ended.

Well if you stand by what you say then your contract ended with them 2 years ago according to your opening post so you won't have any issues :rotfl:

But it doesn't matter one bit what other providers have charged you the fact is that you switched while in a fixed term contract so you have to pay. But why shouldn't they charge you? there is a fixed date in the contract clearly stated.

So if your angry then be angry at yourself and give yourself a good telling off for being so slack.

I don't consider myself as being slack at all. I tried to change my new activation date but was unable to. I tried that last week - 2 weeks before the changeover. And OK, I accept I have to pay their cancellation fee but it is the disproportanate amount that I feel strongly about. Whichever way you look at it and whatever anyones views are the amount for one day is excessive when compared to my monthly contract fee.

If you'd organised the switch for being after the end of the fixed term you would have paid for the month and then been refunded for the unused days. You can never rely on the switch being exactly on the last day if that was what you were aiming at.

I have, even after I'd phoned to ask what the earliest date was that I could switch without a termination fee. When I complained they claimed that they'd said I would pay a termination fee for that date, I argued that made no sense as I'd asked them for the date & when I pushed them to escalate to the ombudsman they caved and refunded it. In future you should always ask your existing provider first for the earliest date you can switch without paying a termination fee. At least then if it's wrong then it's their fault.

I agree, but I wasn't party to the contract you signed & so my opinion is irrelevant.

Further to my erm, relatively mild mannered rant above in the interest of honesty and fairness I must state here that I have been contacted by John Lewis who have apologised for the email I received informing me I would be charged a cancellation fee. This was an automated email and should not have been sent. They are going to ensure that I will be refunded if the charge is applied to my account.

If there is a moderator that could remove this thread, and my title which included my remark "be cautious, be aware" then please do.

I've edited the title but thought the thread could be deleted completely. Don't know how to do that.
