Refund on Amex for holiday?

Please bare with me if I ramble, don’t make sense, or am asking
A stupid question. I’m due to be going on a luxury long haul holiday in 3 weeks. Booked in my name and paid for in several instalments on my American Express card. My partner and I broke up, a friend was then coming with me, but due to extreme circumstances I took an overdose and was hospitalised, so understandably, my friend is very concerned about being responsible for me on holiday. I do not have any travel insurance, am under the crisis team at home, and wondered if I could claim back through Amex- a friend seemed to think you could? I’ve another day to cancel with virgin and loose 70%, after that it goes up to 90% loss. Sorry if it’s a stupid question, but it’s another stress in my whirlwind brain x

    Phone Amex and ask them?

Why, of why, don't people take out travel insurance, especially for a long haul luxury holiday. In your particular case it might to have helped, but if a doctor were to say you were medically unfit to make the trip, at least you would have stood a better chance of making a claim. Doesn't help you now OP but maybe others will take note.

I can see no reason why Amex would refund you I'm afraid. They are not going to be able to recover the money from the merchant.

Depends which Amex card you have. Platinum comes with travel insurance. If it's not Platinum then you are not covered. Apart from any insurance provided by Amex, they will not reimburse you.

If you're definitely not going I would cancel now and get the 30% back. The 70% is lost in my opinion, I doubt if any insurer would pay out for you taking an overdose, and Amex themselves are under no obligation to pay anything back.

The has been no failure to provide the services that you paid for with the card, so no chance of claiming anything back through Amex, unless there is insurance coverage.

You could just try and pull yourself together enough to take the trip as planned with your friend, it would probably do you good and help you relax and realise that heavy emotions have less reality and are impermanent, like everything.

Seriously? Would you tell someone with a broken leg, just to pull themselves together?

Please take advice from the professionals treating you, as to whether you are well enough for a trip abroad. If you are, and your friend agrees, take out some travel insurance and make sure it covers any mental health issues you could have while away.

OP, if you feel that going on the holiday would be beneficial for your health, is there another friend who could go with you? There would be costs involved with changing the name of your companion of course, but maybe they would pay those costs themselves?

Getting insurance now would be difficult (and expensive) but perhaps one of the mental health charities could advise you on that.

He is a she, and she thanked eDicky for his post.

Depression, grief, bereavement, are all things that are all too quickly treated with drugs these days.

I have the utmost sympathy for OP. Break ups can hit you hard and I can understand the feeling that life is not worth living. But a positive mental attitude is the only way to truly beat it. OP needs to get on with her life. Things will get better. Keep to routines. Get out of the house every day. Do some exercise, even if it's just going out for a walk. And go on that holiday. It will probably do you the world of good.
