Electorol Issues Urgent Help Needed

Options
I find myself in a situation in which i am not sure how to deal with. Long story short i moved address about 20 years or so ago. Before then i only lived at one other address.

On my credit report one letter of name is mispelt i.e if my name is Adam, it is spelt Adab. This only shows up on my previous address for one year on the electorol roll. My new address for the past 20 years has my correct spelling.

I have contacted experian, equifax all the credit agencies and they all told me to contact the counci and get them to contact them with the updated information. I contacted the council and they have confirmed my spelling is incorrect but they are not allowed legally to change it! They cannot amend the record for that period in 2000 and i have to live with the consquences.

After going back and forth for one hour we are at a standstil and i would appreciate any help in getting this resolved.

My concern is any search during that period will see two different names - how badly is this gonna effect me and obtaining credit, services etc!

I cannot believe i am getting punished for someone elses mistake!

I can't see that anyone is going to punish you at all, unless it's an optional service on offer.

Your current ER registration will demonstrate the address validation and stability they are looking for.

I am not sure about these sort of thing work so any advice is appreciated.

My understandings is this would cause red flags, identity fraud or something

My name is spelt (not real name) Adam for the last 20 years at my new address on the ER
My name is spelt (not real name) Adab for the one year at my old address on the ER

Would companies not look at this as dodgy and also when applying for new products some may reject me straight away due to the inconsistencies and data not matching up?

Question is - how do i get this changed? Can i just remove that one year altogether if i cannot get it removed

They'll look at the 6 years of data on your credit files, see that your name is spelt correctly, you live where you claim you do (unless you're not) and review your application on its merits.

You're not committing ID fraud and there are no red flags.

ive checked my credit report and a few companies have checked my information (when doing searches) on my previous address and no surprise the few that have aall came back to reject me when applying for credit.

I have no RED FLAGS at all and i am as legit as they come but i am concerned about any people who look at my history on my previous address will see the the name spelling is different by one character and wonder why?

Is there anyway i can ammend this? I cannot belive the council are telling me there are no options for me and i have to live with their errors. Its unbelievable

You have already been told by the Council that records cannot be changes retrospectively and advise by ZX81 that it is nothing to be concerned about. Time to let go of this and worry about something else.

This is highly unlikely to be the reason you have been turned down for credit, particularly from so long ago. Spelling mistakes on the electoral roll are not uncommon.

For years our council used to alternate between spelling my mum's first name Jane and Jayne on the electoral roll. These variations of name showed up on her credit file but never caused any issue whatsoever with obtaining credit.

Also my own credit file used to have a mixture of some accounts with my first name as Nick and others with it as Nicholas (which it officially is) Again it never caused me a problem in getting credit.

I recently got equifax to remove an entry for a different spelling of my name, although that wasn't an electoral roll entry. I'd go back to the CRAs and send them a copy of the letter from the council saying they are refusing to update historic details. If you still get nowhere then contact the information commissioner.

Interestingly my new report is due tomorrow and there is a message that my next report will include new electoral roll details for 1989-2006, which is odd as my current one has 1988-2006.
