PS Shaggy, when I agreed with Glenda I wasn't meaning to "do down" the article, it's just that I agree with her that there is scrutiny where women are concerned that men are still not subjected to, and also I kind of gave up on diets a while ago because of the conflicting advice and because none of them seem to really work long-term for most people. I should have said thanks for posting the link though. :)

good evening everyone! I'm at 12/26, please Shaggy. Thank you for the link. There does seem to be more noise about fat carried around the mid-section, specifically visceral fat and the possible link to insulin resistance; type 2 diabetes etc. I have to confess that I don't count calories - I try to control portion size and cutting back on the booze has helped enormously of course.

My swimsuit has made it as far as a bag along with a towel :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I feel so much better for having had 2 AF nights in a row. I need to sort my iron levels out but staying off the booze has made an immediate difference. Must remember this tonight when the Tiger beers are calling me from the fridge

  • Sorry if I was a bit harsh yesterday. Dieting talk is a massive trigger for me - Mum was constantly on a diet when I was growing up, and expected her family to follow suit so she wasn't suffering alone. I know that isn't normal, but it really messed up me and my sister when it comes to food and body image (hellooo eating disorders!) Also none of them worked long term, which left me with some very cynical views on magic weight loss programmes (WW and SW, looking at you with a great deal of side eye).

Anyhoo, this isn't a diet debate thread so I'll shut up now! I love how there is room here for a broad range of views and approaches, and it wasn't my intention to shut anyone down.
  • Shaggy I apologise for jumping in with both feet first.

    Declaring on 17/28 for today.

I found all the talk about BMI, weightloss and diets interesting and helpful. I hope no-one was offended by it; I'm pretty sure weight loss or weight control is like booze - what works for one person might not for another. All information is helpful but we each need to find our own solution from the many on offer. There's no doubt that as a nation a very high proportion of the population is bigger than we used to be and it's not helpful health-wise. My mother struggled with weight all her life, and until I gave up smoking and then hit the menopause I never had a problem. Years of extreme (for me) over-indulgence on my part with chocolate and cheese caused this and I want to stop feeling uncomfortable with my cushiony tummy. Any and all information is welcome - I don't, however calorie-count or diet. Never have, never will but it doesn't stop me wanting to know about them. I simply need to find a way to stop eating the whole packet of biscuits when stressed, or even better - don't get that stressed. I'm working on both.

    19/30 please, Shaggy.
    Better is good enough.
