Orange merge with EE threatens to compromise my current Orange plan

I just recieved a letter from Orange (dated 1st April!) stating that they are "...officially bringing Orange and EE together. So we are closing our old Orange plans and switching all our customers to EE ones" It also goes on to say that "Not much will change, and you don't need to do anything."

I have had an Orange SIM-only account for years. It comes with 500mb of data, 1000 minutes & 'unlimited texts per month, and cost me currently £2.57 - a figure that I once negotiated as a result of poor customer service. As you can imagine I have been continually delighted with this deal.

According to the letter, the new EE plan will give me 300mb of data, 500 minutes & unlimited texts per month for a cost of £5.99! :exclamati

So they are substituting my old plan with significantly degraded service and charging me more than double for it.

I haven't yet contacted them about this but, my question to the community is: Are they legally allowed to do this and do I have a leg to stand on?

Any advice gratefully recieved. Thanks
