I want to leave Sky

Hi everybody, I want to leave Sky. My friend has suggested Now TV as an alternative but it seems that you can't record programmes.
My other friend has given me her old PS3 which I can watch Netflix through and it looks like I can watch Now TV through that (saves me buying a box).
On reading through old threads here it seems I can use my existing box to watch Freesat through (but not record).
I can't afford to spend a lot of money on a set top recorder box, will I need one or does Now TV have a search/playback function?
We don't watch a lot of TV but there are certain things like Game of Thrones that we love, however we go to bed fairly early so (I think ) we need to record them.
Please help, I'm a bit confused by all the options.

Now TV is primarily a streaming service , but offers access to some Sky TV channels to watch ‘live’ but AFAIK, you cannot record them to watch later...so presumably your example of G.O.T , you would have to watch it ‘live’ ( on Sky Atlantic or whatever channel shows it) or wait until it became part of a box set available on NowTV.

OP are you out of contract with Sky if not factor in paying off contract costs first.

You wouldn't have to watch it live - as well as the box sets collections Now TV has a 'catch up' service where you can watch recent Sky programs on demand as well as access to BBC iPlayer, ITV hub, All4 etc... You'd need to pay for the Now TV Entertainment package (£6.99 or £7.99 ? a month) for access to Sky Atlantic
  • You don’t need a pvr if you’ve got decent internet. Most stuff is available on catchup. Nowtv is much better value than Sky.

As others have mentioned you don't need a recording facility, a lot of shows whether it be on Sky or on the traditional FTA channels (BBC, ITV, C4 etc) have shows on catch up, so there really is no need to watch shows "live" any more. The only time recording is useful is when you're watching channels/shows that have adverts, at least with record material you can skip these, streaming unfortunately you can't.

If you definitely want a recording facility have a look out for second-hand Humax Freesat recorders (HDR-1100S), they wont give you Sky channels but will record everything else on Freesat.

Also, one thing to be aware of is BT will soon have the facility to record shows from their NowTV app on their YouView+ boxes if you wanted to move to BT that is.
