Asking the savvy community here as Im thinking in the last 30-months things may have moved on spec wise.
Just want to get max bang for buck0 -
As others have said, it depends on what the purpose is... for example, is the intention to use it as a desk computer? In which case size and weight doesn’t matter too much, if it is going to be carried around a slim lightweight laptop with a smaller screen and long battery life may be the best bet.
FWIW, I quite happily use an old Asus X55A that cost £250 from Argos several years ago, it has had the HDD replaced with an SSD and Windows 8 upgraded to Win 10. By any benchmark it’s nothing special, but it boots in well under a minute (a few seconds if from a sleep). It runs electronic CAD software and Libre Office easily. I would love to replace it with an i7 super machine... but cannot see the point as it does everything I need it for and is used several times a week.0 -

Best bang for buck? Minimum spec these days is 256GB SSD, 8GB memory and the best CPU you can afford...somthing like this

> 8GB memory
Yes that's something that surprised me recently. I have a refurb i5 business laptop which came with an SSD and 4GB. It starts up like lighting but has had the odd slowdown and when I checked that 4GB was looking to be highly utilised by actual programs rather than just cache so I've ordered another 4GB SODIMM to upgrade it. How the hell can the windows coders be using up so much memory these days?0 -
For£450, you could look for Ryzen 5 2500u with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD

Even the slowest processor on the market today is more than adequate to run MS Office and browse the web, anything with 4GB of RAM will do the job As would any tablet or Chromebook for £250.
No need to spend more than £300 unless you are looking for something with a screen larger than 15".No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Depends on what you need it for. If it's just browsing and MS Office, then you have plenty enough picks.0
