You're not really contributing at all, you're spreading misinformation.

None of what you claim to be true is actually true.

I am happy to correct. What was the misinformation?

Thats why I decided to contribute. There is a lot of misinformation around this. Without getting into specifics, we contact the other bank via a dedicated platform and advise them of our customers claim. They will immediately freeze the beneficiary account. For about 20 days they will investigate the receiving account. The benefit of doubt is with the victim not the beneficiary.

That's a load of rubbish. So if I'm annoyed at someone I can just get them to send me some money by bank transfer then ring up my bank and they will get their account frozen for 20 days without any proof :rotfl:

If your annoyed at someone and they send you money how is that a scam?

If however you send them money, call your bank and lie that you have been scammed then the process is invoked. Your bank can contact the beneficiary bank and advise of the scam. The beneficiary bank freezes their customers accounts, asks them to explain the credit you sent. The person you're annoyed at advises the money is unexpected, the money gets returned and the blocks lifted. All you've done is wasted a few hours of everyones time.

There is obviously no way to prove this procedure exists, has done so for a number of years and has recovered scam money for a number victims.

If the OP does report his scam to Bank of Scotland, hopefully they can come back and confirm my claims.

To the OP. There is less than a 0.00005[STRIKE]0[/STRIKE]% chance you will get your money back.

    Fixed it for you.

Even if the bank did freeze the money, all the account holder has to say is that they posted the phone and then bank will unfreeze - the banks don't get involved in squabbles...
  • Think you will find they do get involved if need be.

I sold an item once, and accepted a bank transfer, but I actually sent the item with RM.

The buyer hadn't received anything, but instead of coming to me she went to the police and they apparently advised she went to her bank.

The first I knew of it was when I tried to withdraw money from the ATM at my bank and it ate my card and I went and spoke to a member of staff and they checked my account and I was passed a phone to speak to their fraud team.

They explained the situation and that they had frozen my account because they suspected I was scamming someone.

They pointed out if I had proof I would need it.

Lucky for me I sent it recorded delivery at the time and had the tracking details, so the bank looked at this and unfroze my account.

I then had to escalate with RM who looked into it and in the end the item was traced, it has been left at the buyers delivery office as no one had been home.

So they do get involved and freeze accounts.

Lucky I kept the proof of posting and I had the tracking number to check, also I've never accepted a bank transfer for a sale again.

Did you end up getting issued a replacement card after your account was reinstated or was the card retrieved from the machine?

Same card as far as i remember, this was early 2016.
It was retrieved straight away from the ATM as it was the ATM in the branch I used.

As already pointed out by other members the above statement is not true.

    The above is completely true

Fortunately i have been in similar situations in this both as the buyer and seller. In truth the banks say that they cant do alot but they can if they want too. First thing is first contact your bank and tell them what has happened. You may get messed around at first sying they cant help you etc but its not true, you just need to speak to someone who knows what they are talking about. Also write emails to all their top teir, exceutives board members, ceo, complaints etc and explain what has happened.

Second of all repeat the same thing with the scammers bank. Contact their bank by phone, in branch, email all their execs, ceo etc and explain the situation.

My guess is the person who scammed you is using his real bank account and thought he could get away with it becuse it was a bank transfer. As others have pointed out never do a bank transfer before you purchse the item, use paypal if you wanna by safe or cash in hand in a public place. Bank transfer refunds are a nightmare to handle. Now ultimately what may happen is all the banks will get involved and talk to each other and no-one can force the individual to return your money and it is unlikely you will get a refund from the bank altthough ive seen it happen. The guys bank will contact him and get his side of the story and basically tell him to send the money back, they cant force him. They will end up closing his account one way or another and put a CIFAS on him. He will get screwed either way. Chances are he will sned the money back once he finds out how much trouble he is in. Update me what happens and ile tell you where to go from there depedning on what happens next

What an overreaction on their part ! Freezing your account could cause you all sorts of problems.

I dont blame you not doing bank transfers after that.

First I've ever heard of this, its always been publicized they wont do anything in these circumstances.
