An E.on engineer came out 2 weeks ago to do meter reads. I wasn't home, so I don't know if he might have found that the meter was wrong, with regards to the way I'm billed......

Our posts will have crossed so you have already answered some questions.

Can you monitor your readings on line ?

I don't expect the meter reading read both gas and electric.

Could you post the actual readings (not the consumption) from Sept 2018 and today please.

You have a old house - badly insulated by todays standards -

Your electricity is about average - assuming about 1000 units for the missing July 2108 - Oct 2018 (I appreciate you weren't there but you will be this Summer/Autumn) is about £650 a year; gas 500 for the missing quarter is £900 a year. Add standing charges and VAT £1700 a year

What figures did you initially give to SSE and then to Eon as your estimated consumption - I hope it wasn't the £68 from your old house or the number of rooms.

Are your readings actually being used by Eon -

Yes my readings seem to be used by E.on as all the bills have "C" Customer Reads next to them

I gave SSE the same closing reads that E.on has. I even rang SSE twice to double confirm these reads.
    Reads on 3rd Oct
    E 10100
    G 04399

    Closing reads in January
    E 11090
    G 05430

With regards to the meters themselves, the electric meter is one of the LCD ones beige with buttons down the side. The Gas meter looks like the old style silver boxes, but it has an LCD screen stuck to the front.

One for Houbara - our resident meter reader - can you identify these please ?

I don't have the opening read when I moved in. It was a fraught process and I never thought to check...

Here are my reads, Electric and Gas

    Oct - Jan
    10100 - 11090
    04399 - 05430

    Jan - Apr
    11090 - 11865
    05430 - 06235

    Apr - Jul
    11865 - 13064
    06235 - 06682

The final meter reads are the most recent I gave them.

    All looks OK to me.

You have an old house with high demands for your young family.

I was afraid you'd say that...

What suggestions do you have for bringing that down?

The house is 4 floors, cellar has been converted into a kitchen (with patio doors leading to back yard) and there are two attic rooms with skylights that are generally quite warm year round. The kitchen is by far and away the coldest part of the house.

Could I have a faulty or really inefficient boiler?

Last house had a brand spanking new System heater (house built in 2010) and the shock of this is hard to take even almost a year on!

    Thanks

Where is the thermostat? And what do you have it set to? Same with the water tank? If its a combi boiler that has a water pre-heat tank, that can be very wasteful on Gas, turn it off.

If its in the kitchen it will be going like mad, And when was the kitchen converted and was it insulated on all the wall? When was the attic rooms done?

Im sure most would get a shock compared to a 2010 built home.

The thermostat is in the living room (Hive)

I don't know much about combi boilers, how do I find out what type it is? (the boiler is on the living room level)

    Thanks

Hi everyone. I'm really sorry it has taken so long to reply - I have had quite a lot on.

Since I last posted, I racked up quite a lot of debt with E.on and have spent 3 months paying £183 a month to pay it off. While I was paying the debt off, the regular use was not being paid (this was set by E.on, not me) so I am now in debt again and the E.on system is recommending that I up my monthly payments to £200 a month. I doubt this is normal as E.on's own website says that I am paying close to 5 times as much as similar homes in my area (though it does not specify what type of homes or how wide the area is). This amount is crippling us.

I asked a neighbour 4 doors up how much he pays and said about £120 a month combined, also with E.on

    OK readings in kWh:

    3 Apr to 16 Jul 2019
    Electricity - 1199
    Gas - 4952

    18 Jan to 3 Apr 2019
    E - 775
    G - 8987

    3 Oct 2018 to 18 Jan 2019
    E - 990
    G - 11510

These have all been my readings. There was some overestimation in April, but I corrected this and should reflect in the numbers above.

    Thanks

Hello Ypnos and thank you for the additional information.

This is unusual. Our Monthly Direct Debits usually include the outstanding balance with the ongoing usage. Do you have a separate payment arrangement for the arrears only?

Please talk to us about the arrangement. We'll be happy to look to see if it's possible to spread the balance over a longer period. This will bring down the monthly payments a little.

    Thanks Ypnos.

I asked the representative on the phone this specific question, whether the £183 a month is just for paying off the debt and he said yes. So I've just spent 3 months paying off the debt, which means I'm in debt again!

I have requested a callback from E.on some time ago to get in with the home insulation scheme (and possibly boiler) some time ago but heard nothing back.
