Did you ask him to show you...?
It's thin steel that's vulnerable underneath the car, in the full path of weather and road filth. Entirely possible.0 -
no damage, mechanic said it was rusty as it doesn't have a cover apparentlyEarly retired in summer 2018 and loving it0

This is a common problem on Fiat Pandas and Puntos, particularly the 1.2 litre engine for some reason.
They usually last a bit longer than that, but not unheard of at that age and mileage.0 -

I was just thinking that I read somewhere about a newish car which dumped it's oil due to a rusty sump.
Suppose it was one of these.0 -

Rusty sumps are quite common nowadays, as modern engines don't leak oil like in The Olden Days, which used to keep the engine free of corrosion.
The sump rotted through on my old MK4 escort- I'd never seen a rusty sump before, but I had always had BL vehicles.
Now I keep an eye out for rust on the sump, both the Suzuki and the [STRIKE]Renault[/STRIKE] Nissan have had to have their sumps wirebrushed and painted with (supposedly) anti-corrosion metal paint.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

think I'll need to get a second opinion
anyone else had this with a panda or punto at such low miles and young age?Early retired in summer 2018 and loving it0 -

Just look underneath. Either it is so rusty that it is leaking, and requires replacement, or it is just surface rust and a quick wirebrush & paint will extend its life. There is always the risk that wirebrushing off the rust will actually make it leak though.
A leaky sump is pretty obvious, it will be wet with oil, rather than just covered in dry flaky rust.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
