I've spoken to the guy today and while I already knew xsara's tend to need a bit of welding on the sils the report didn't sound that good.
However he did say it wasn't that bad and well it's not me paying for the repairs so if I'm not happy think I will just walk away.
This will be my 3rd Pic and always looked after them with a full service every year.
The one I have now can be driven but was damaged by a bus catching the back and scraping the side making it too costly for the age to repair 2007 plate with 76k miles. It's never failed on anything bad on an MOT shame we have to get rid.
Can't you buy some new panels for it from a scrappy or even ebay? It's only got 76K miles and you know the history so it might be worth saving if it is mechanically sound.0 -
So I went ahead and bought the car, the guy put it up on the ramp and showed me where it needed the welding doing on both sides and to be honest it was nothing. Hes put a new plate in either side and had it repainted.
knocked a few quid off because he said get the timing belt done in the next 20k so talked him down to knock something off because of that but I got it in the next day at a local garage had it done.
I also asked them to give it a once over explaining I had just bought it and it's been given a clean bill of health.
The only downside is the owner before last didn't get it serviced for about 8 years. But it's had 3 done in the last 2 years by the last owner so plan on keeping that up now we have it.
So instead of £1600 I got it for £1450.
As for the other car it's getting scrapped next week0 -

I have come across cars particularly jaguars that have failed mot due to minor rust issues that can be put right quite easy but its more about the cost of the repair that people just sell them as spares, as soon as people hear the word rust without seeing it the tutting starts etc...
I wouldnt rule a car out because it has failed mot on rust without seeing it first like you did on a ramp etc... providing that the rest of the car is sound, what i have seen over the years is that some mot testers are very strict as their just trying to cover their own back or trying to get a bit more cash from the customer not all but some that i have had delt with
All the best with it hope it serves you well, as for your other car dont scrap it,just put it on fleebay as spares and let it go for what you can get for it as there may be someone outthere that needs a doner car for parts better than the scrappy, i did this on a bmw once and the chap paid a lot more that scrap“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. Because some of us are a bit knowledgeable, have done things like restoring cars and know that once it gets to MOT failure stage behind the bits that the mechanic is just planning on plating over is a whole world of future hurt on its way. I have a MX5 and usually by the time the rear of the sills needs plating for a MOT the inner sills and much of the lower inner rear arch is shafted too and the rest of the back half of the sills, both inner and outer going from back to front aren't far behind but you'll only ever see a plate welded over the top of the hole. To do the job properly is a major repair. Sure the patch will get you through the MOT but there's not much strength left in what is remaining of the rest of the panel.
Did you read my post or are you just looking to pick holes and massively generalise as per usual
Just becuase your mx5 needs a fair bit of welding does not mean that every car that fails mot is a rust bucket, thats why i stated that i would not buy a car unless i saw the extent of the problem and as the op has said in his case and in others i have seen the problem can be rectified and made good without comprising the structural integrity of the car , no 2 cars are the same
and when i said when people hear rust i meant in general such as family or freinds without even seeing the car and just as you have heard "rust" you have proved the very point i was making thinking that if a car fails then its past it which is not the case as every car is diffrent and should be looked at on a case by case basis instead of generalising...
Oh and if you going to quote then quote it all so people can the see the context of the message instead of trying to make it out that i was reffering to the members on here“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. To be fair if you look up xsara picasso MOT's you'll see 90% of them always have problems on the outter sills.
Looking at the xsara picasso forums it's a common problem on these cars that can be fixed and last for years and years as proven by those that restore these cars.
Because of the job that my wife does she needs a car and its a new job but temp job till August maybe ongoing so this car really is only a stop gap for maybe 2/3 years once she can get perm work.
This car has pretty much passed all it's Mot's with minor work needing doing like bushes, break and headlights so I'm not too bothered. I guess I will have to wait till the next MOT and see what it fails on to know if I've bought a rust bucket.
Ratrace - I tried to put the car up for sale on different sites as donor car CAT N but other than a few might be interested didn't get any offeres of £200 so letting it go for scrap now0 -
