    That was how it was believed to be until the T&Cs were changed so was that recently as it does not match with either the T&Cs now or a letter sent out recently?

    yeah i won the cheque last month and emailed bauer last week, got the reply yesterday.

    The reply was from a bloke called Spike, who after quick google search is publishing director.

    Yep, the T&Cs now make no mention of being allowed to enter for competitions worth under £500 (and in any dispute the T&Cs would take precedence)
