  • I really hope you get something sorted out for the children as it would be such a lost opportunity for you. I know what it's like to be home all day everyday with young children and even though it's work I think it would be good for all concerned for you to have a couple of hours away from home and family. Apart from the extra money it's another interest for you. Fingers crossed for you and good luck.

I wouldnt say i have no help but its just the two days they want me their is no one!
Whereabouts are you happy mummy? I'd happily help on a one-off basis if you are anywhere near Cambridge. I am a teacher, had three under-fives of my own at one time (now aged 22, 20 and 17) and could provide references etc.
Alternatively, couldn't your husband take two days holiday from his work just as a one-off?

  • Hi everyone,
Im just back from my first day induction!! My parents took the girls for me so i could make it but i felt terrible when i got back to see them trying to juggle everything.
Im exausted! I met lots of nice people and enjoyed finding out lots more about IKEA! Unfortunatly i also found out they are only paying minimum wage so it does only cancel out my tax credit but at least i get my staff discount and practically free food+drink (chicken and chips apparently came to 35p,lol) in staff canteen.
I really would encourage anyone to apply, they give loads of incentives like staff xmas pressie, new store opening pressie,15% staff discount, life insurence.pension ect.
Nenen how kind of you to offer, but im in northern ireland!! But it was very nice of you to offer anyway.
Anyway i cant wait to get in and started (we get a preview day for friends+family quite soon!)
Thanks to you all for watching this post and perhaps i will see you in there!!!
    xxx Laura.

Congratulations HappyMummy, I hope you really really enjoy your new job.

Once when I worked in their Brent Park store in London I served the big boss, ie the big big BIG boss from Sweden who oversees the whole entire Ikea empire. He queued up for about an hour with everybody else, and I didn't realise it was him until the customer after him showed me his picture in that year's catalogue!

The Christmas presents can be a wee bit naff though. One year we got a tea and coffee maker. It was rubbish, lol. Tried to flog it at a car boot sale, but nobody wanted it. However one year we got little handheld televisions - they were pretty damn cool! And another year we received radio/cassette players, good quality ones (this was in the days when all LPs were available on cassette of course).

The 15% discount is fabulous - comes into its own for Christmas and birthdays, it was the best thing about working there, especially as there is so much choice.

Give your hubby a slap round the back of the head, he should be happy for you.
  • So glad you were able to get sorted out and got to attend your induction. Hope you enjoy the job. I am waiting till the initial rush is over before I venture into the store but will look out for you when I get there.

When I finally make a trot up after the initial furore has died down, I'll wear my MSE t-shirt so I can be spotted ;):D:D:D

It'll be great to have an insider...you can find out when the 'quieter' times are (that'll be about February 2010 then :D ) and let us know when it is safe to venture in. I live nearby but don't fancy facing the hoards in the initial weeks. Someone I was speaking to said they are expecting around 30,000 customers on the first day

I visited the Glasgow store midweek on an 'average' day and it took about 45 mins to get through the checkouts. Anybody who wants to buy anything on opening day will be lucky to get to the checkout before New Year! :rotfl:

Fantastic news! Glad you were able to go.

I love Ikea, my house is practically all Ikea:rotfl: Go to Glasgow and Newcastle ones. I don't think I will be going anywhere near our one until wayyyy next year!:rotfl:

    Good luck with the job:beer:
