It's the company in control of the DCC thats worrying.I for one am not happy about being enroled and adopted by them. Its a very good reason for people to refuse a smart meter for not just the meter alone.

Actually that's probably the only valid reason that I've seen and agree with for not having a smart meter.

    Hi
    Appreciate advice on following
Dad had called eon regarding meter readings.
Eon advisor told dad his current deal expires next yest and if he doesn't have a smart meter they will be unable to offer him a deal.
Is this even legal? Smart meters are not compulsory

Feel dad being manipulated and im annoyed
    Please advise

Thanks. Ive not been keeping up to date with smart meter issues do was unaware it was a move they can actually make.

Hello tkwad and already some excellent advice on here - thanks all.

Smart meters are optional and your dad can opt out if he wishes. By going for one of our current Fixed Tariffs, he only agrees to be contacted about smart meters and he can continue to opt out. At this point, we'll talk to him about the options available.

Depending on the circumstances, it might not be possible to install a smart meter as they're not available everywhere yet. This won't have an impact on his chosen tariff if he decides to renew with us. He can stay on the deal he goes for even where we're unable to fit smart meters.

The reduced running costs of smart when compared to classic meters means we're able to offer lower rates to customers taking up these meters. If he does decide to go for a smart meter and we're able to fit okay, it'll also take away the hassle of having to give us meter readings unless he wants to continue doing this.

Hope this adds to the advice already given tkwad. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

Hello G_M and you're right. Our Fix 2 Year Exclusive tariff isn't on our website. It's only available through My Utility Genius to existing customers who have received an invitation to sign up to the tariff.

This offer is aimed exclusively at customers who've been on a standard variable tariff for up to 2 years. These customers will have already had their Price Cap letter telling them about the price increase. I can also confirm, smart meters aren't a condition of this tariff.

Eligible customers will receive a link to a website, powered by My Utility Genius, to sign up online. This tariff is only available to these customers. As ever, I'd advise anyone interested and who has received the invitation to pop their usage in kWh on to a Price Comparison site to see how this tariff stacks up against the rest of the market.

We're looking to withdraw this tariff from sale next week.

    Hope this explains.

Hello mumf and it looks like you've gone for a different tariff to the one I've just posted about to G_M above (Fix 2 Year Exclusive via My Utility Genius).

It sounds like you're on our most recent collective with MSE. This was the Fix 2 Year MSE Collective Feb 2019 tariff which was only available through MSE's Cheap Energy Club. It was withdrawn from sale on 22 February 19.

As you say, this also didn't have smart meters as a condition and cashback was given by MSE.

    Hope this explains.
