Half flush

Many modern cysterns have a half flush but people don't know. They waste half the cytern every time they use the full flush. Hundreds of gallons a year. Try holding down the handle each time and see whether it saves water. If you are on a meter you are paying for this

Welcome to the forum.
The problem is that the 'half flush' is not standardised.
In my house I have one that requires the handle held down fully for a couple of seconds to get the half flush, and another that requires the handle held down fully for a full flush.
Then I have another with recessed buttons to flush.0 -
As Cardew says, they are all a bit different -both of mine have got two buttons, half and full and by holding the main flush button it will give extra.
However the half flush button hardly dilutes liquid contents and certainly wont shift "solids" so it's virtually useless.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Apparently, animal farming entails using more water than anything else in the world so I've heard. Since I stopped eating meat I don't worry about my water consumption anymore because I'm saving so much by not eating meat. I do hate those half flushes too...doesn't even remove all the waste liquid
Also, in my opinion, even if you're not on a meter and using a lot of water you're still paying for it, just not with money. It's all a cost to the environment, but I suppose that's not what we're discussing on this site!!0 -

Dunno where you get that from - you should see the amount of water that has to be used for irrigation to grow crops.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Right, so think about the amount that has to be used to grow crops to feed animals raised for meat or in dairy farms. Takes a lot less land to grow crops to feed humans than it does to feed farm animals. I watched a documentary about it that was focusing on the different sources of damage to the planet.0 -

That is one of the grossest sayings I've heard0 -

You put so eloquently what I was thinking :rotfl:.
I hate when I have to use a toilet with different sized buttons for flushing and have to try and work out what combination of pushes will release enough water to clear the pan.Debt Free: 01/01/2020

Probably just requires adjustment.
You need to have a fiddle with the insides of the cistern so that more water is used for the half flush...
I blame the EU... for this and everything. :j0 -
@stardestroyer's point is that agriculture and industry use the bulk of water in the UK. Consumers use 30% of the water supply so to see meaningful reduction in water use, requires industry to make their savings too.
And the water companies have to plug leaks quicker and spend on prevention.0
