I would say that if a £6,000 one didn't do anything for me then a £250 one wouldn't do anything either!

It's quite fun to sit on though!! ;)

I was interested in getting one as we are building a home gym and popped into JJB and had a go on the vibration plate (think it was around £250). The sales assistant said the machine worked the muscles much more efficiently, so when doing a regular squat your muscle contracts once, but doing a squat using the vibration plate the muscles contract lots of times. Thought it might be a useful piece of equiptment to aid my workout, mainly for body toning.

However, from some of your comments it doesn't look it is very efficient at that...

That depends entirely on what you are training to achieve.

The vibration will cause your muscles to contract to hold position. This is not just the ones targetting by the exercise itself e.g. squatting for legs...it will in most exercises force your abs to contract to keep your balance.

If you are training for muscle gain, resistance will do a lot more than a vibration of your bodyweight as resistance causes your muscles to tear. So, the more weight, the more potential gain.

So, if you are using it to gain muscle I would look into it further because without adding more weight than your legs are used to - you won't gain, more just tone.

They have been showing two of these on Screenshop for a while.

    Thanks for your comment.

I am mainly wanting to tone the muscle I already have, not increase muscle.

Have you used the vibration plate?

No I haven't, but I have seen a few of them. The principle is the same as those vibrablade thingies you see where you shake and hold the bar.

It's supposed to make your muscles hold the contraction without doing the usual weight work to get where you want to go.

I have used EMS before. I would imagine that it would have a similiar effect to EMS on a lower/quick setting so it would tone.

If you do exercises (even with small hand weights) on the plate, I'm sure it will give toning results as it's going to make you work a bit harder for balance alone.

Have you seen anywhere that will let you try one?

You mean for a trial period? If so, then no.

I have tried one when I visited a sports shop, and did it for a minute but you can't really tell how effective it is going to be from that. I'm sure there must be places that do something along the lines of a 30 day money back trial... But I have not found one as yet.

Let us know if you do ...

I've suggested DH should see if his health club has one he could use. But as he wants to improve bone density, and as they won't re-scan him for a couple of years, and as he's also got calcium supplements (with Vit D, although not enough!) on prescription, it's going to be hard to tell what has helped!

The ones on TV Network & Screenshop have a 30 day return but they only refund the product price, not the postage. I'm not sure if they collect it free as well so check it just incase if you decide to try with them as the units are £250 I think and I'll bet returning them would cost if you had to pay yourself.
There are cheaper units but don't know about the return side.

There seems to be plenty of info via Google on them.

Since people like Total Fitness are using them, I wonder if you could grab one of those "try our gym for a month" deals and go just to try these things out???
