    Confused is an understatement.

I didn't think I had PPI as only have had a mortgage and credit card (paid in each month) and if I hadn't found the mortgage letter the other week would have done nothing. When I found it I used the MSE template to contact Woolwich/Barclays and received the letter that stated 'We no longer hold the offer document'

Woolwich/Barclays only retailed monthly premium standalone MPPI. it has its own direct debit and not factored into the mortgage. So, if you didnt see the direct debit on your current account for MPPI, then you wouldnt have had it.

That was the wrong template. Sometimes it is recommended that people with certain types of credit ask for a copy of the agreement. That does not apply with mortgages.

Well then you are wasting your time sending the Bank letters asking for the mortgage documentation. Even if they still had it, two decades on, it would be of little use in a PPI complaint.

You even say you already have your own copy, so why have you requested another????

Simply ring the Bank (as they have suggested) and ask them directly if you had PPI attached to the mortgage or even your credit card.

That should put your mind at rest once and for all..

I think I need to summarise

    1. I have never considered that I ever had PPI so never pursued the matter
    2. I found a document relating to my 2001 mortgage stating 'Mortgagecare'
    3. Concerned that I may have been charged for this I completed the MSE PPI template and sent to lender. This standard letter requests a copy of the original loan agreement.
4.I received a reply to my letters (I sent 2 as I had split repayment and interest only mortgages) and this stated 'we no longer hold the offer document'

I cannot recall the conversation some 18 years ago but would not have knowingly taken out any insurance to cover loss of job (I was self-employed)

    I hope this helps

Sooooooo the bank have told you they no longer hold a record of the specific document that you requested (which you already have) - well given nearly 20 years ago that seems more than reasonable.

Sounds like you haven’t event submitted a complaint yet... so what is it you are looking for from this forum, if you consider you had an MPPI policy which you think was mis-sold them you submit a complaint (FYI most MPPI polcies covered the self-employed)

you used the wrong template. You used one that asks basically for the agreement which makes no odds to your complaint at all.
So, do as suggested above, send them a SAR. This will tell you what you were paying and what info is left. Be aware, your account was opened 18 years ago, so there may e nothing left. If there is nothing left, your complaint is over.
If it was only recently closed, there may be paperwork left.
Also be aware that mortgage MPPI is not like loan or credit card PPI. Unless you were in a job you couldn't be made redundant from, or you had cover elsewhere to cover your mortgage payments, you're not likely to have an uphold even if there is paperwork left.

    That step was unnecessary.

HINT; a Subject Access Request (SAR) letter will take weeks to likely give you the same answer you would get via telephone in a few minutes..

As before, check any policy you may have does exclude the self-employed-most MPPI did not exclude the self employed and any such complaint will therefore be futile.

It's on a copy of some documentation the OP has which suggests there was Payment Protection. However, that does not mean it was actually paid; it could have been cancelled during the cooling off period for example.

OP needs to contact the Bank for verification. Only if the Bank says they have no records at all should the Subject Access Request (SAR) route be necessary and, even then, is likely to be a futile action.

Pretty obviously, the Bank is puzzled as to why the OP has requested the Mortgage Agreement and is inviting the OP to call them and explain what he actually wants.

In my opinion, the OP would be better off speaking to someone at the Bank directly rather than firing off more random template letters of which he clearly has no understanding.
