How soon before end of current contract to begin process of switching?

My current broadband/phone contract expires mid-May. I don't want to apply for a contract with a new provider too early in case they switch me before the end of my current contract. But neither do I want to to leave it too late in case my current deal auto-renews or I end up paying over the odds for a few days/couple of weeks. At what time should I hit the 'apply' button once I have identified a new provider for my landline/broadband please? I recall Martin mentioning somewhere that one can often leave a utilities contract up to 56 days before the end (or something along those lines) but I don't know if this applies to broadband or if it was just in relation to gas/leccy. Any guidance appreciated.

Your current deal won't auto renewal. It will go onto a 30 day rolling contract at whatever the outside of minimum term price is that was specified when you took it out.
It usually takes 10-15 working days to switch broadband suppliers. I wouldn't worry about paying your old supplier for a few days before everything switches as it won't be that much in the end. Just initiate the migration no earlier than 2 weeks before your current minimum term ends and you should have minimum overlap.0
