Do I need a new mattress?

Options
I purchased a mattress 3.5 years ago from a shop that I’ve purchased beds from before and been very happy with hem for years.

The mattress started out feeling very comfortable but in the last 6-9 months both myself and my husband are getting terrible sleep and waking up very sore with back ache.

Could it be the mattress?

We both weigh about 10-11stone each.
The mattress is 1000 pocket springs and turned and flips regularly with the seasons.

It doesn’t feel like it has the bounce or softness or cushioning it once did.

The appearance of the mattress is that it looks generally fine. It’s exceptionally flat unlike it was when we first got it but there is no sinking or dips in it.

My partner and I both had morning backache which disappeaed when we bought a new mattress.
WHICH recommended one from IKEA which we went for. They let you return it within 90 days if not satisfied but there was no way we were giving it back!

Id try a mattress topper first, I'd expect double that lifespan on a decent matress
  • I’ve heard lots of good things about the ikea mattress

And yes I had expected far longer life out if this mattress too. It’s a costly mistake if one only lasts this long.
  • Mattress toppers seem nearly as expensive as the ikea mattress!

I find you get what you pay for with mattresses. My current mattress, an expensive pocket sprung mattress which weighs a ton, is still as comfortable and supportive as it was when new and it's over 10 years old.

The more expensive mattresses tend to be hand constructed with lots of natural materials and fillings that should last many years. Also, I've never found a pocket sprung mattress to have "bounce" as you mention, it's just not the way they're designed to be.

You'll know when it's time to change a mattress and it sounds like this one you have is about there.
  • This was expensive. And it’s the same as the 10 year old one I had replaced it with.
I’m guessing the quality has dropped.

I also picked one that had only natural fillings as I find I get hot in bed otherwise.

Il take a look at the ikea ones.

Would it be worth calling at the shop where you bought it and discussing the issue? Normally expensive mattresses come with long warranties and if you've been shopping there for years they might be willing to help you. Costs less than buying new mattress or a topper

Harrison mattress? If so, ours is also several years old but is still as good as the day we bought it.

    Buy cheap, buy twice.

I bought what I thought was a very expesive one last year, and it delivers on comfort certainly. It was a Hypnos one. I don't expect to be changing it for ten years, but when you work it out, initial outlay is large but divide it by months and it's not much for something you use every day for hours for months on end.
