HOTPOINT won't disclose spare part number

Just bought a new cooker hood from Hotpoint (direct) and instructions say I should replace the charcoal carbon filter every 4 months - but no parts list in package. Hotpoint Spare Parts Sales Department, Consumer Business Team, have quoted £35.77 each - 4 for £97.88 (!) - but have refused to tell me the part number. They say that this is 'company policy'.
It's a consumable item, replaceable by the customer, so it seems to me that Hotpoint are attempting to restrict sales to themselves, and prevent any 3rd party selling compatible spares cheaper. Is this not against consumer rights somehow?

Any suggestions to deal with this? Anybody from Whirlpool care to justify this restrictive practice?

Just Google make and model number and charcoal filter... you will find dozens available... I doubt such a consumable required a part number, to be honest.

If for some reason you can't find one by doing a search on Google, there is one option.

Order them from Hotpoint, when they arrive make a note of the details on the invoice or on the item packaging (hopefully there will be some), then return them using your 28 day right of return as a distance selling contract.
You may be required to pay the return costs but your original postage should be refunded.

It makes sense to me because they don't want people ringing up all the time just to get part numbers which costs them money to run the department but generates no revenue.

But I don't see how this stops you from getting spares cheaper elsewhere when you can just search for them easily like DaftyDuck says in their post.

Not having a part number has never stopped me from getting spare parts. Most consumable items are readily available from third party suppliers, Hotpoint would be my last choice to purchase such an item.

If you do this, at least know the timescale and legislation. ;)

The charcoal filter usually helps protect the motor. it supposed to be possible to wash them a few times, but I never do, I just replace now an then (last one was in there a few years, and overdue).

It would help to know the hood model. typically on a label inside if you don't know it from the packing/paper work - remove the front fat filter to see it.

it is possible to buy some genuine Hotpoint filters at a fraction of the price as the "wpro" brand on ebay.

Recently replaced mine, wpro one was £11 delivered.

here is proof wpro brand is genuine OEM.

  • Thanks - very helpful. Will use cheapish carbon/grease filter sheets behind the grill, and not worry too much about the filter cartridge clipped in front of the motor.

On the extractor hood I've got, the charcoal filter module screw-in pod is only fitted if you use it "recirculate" mode, intended to remove cooking smells.

In "venting" mode (to the outdoors) you remove it anyway, as that's the whole point of a vent and duct.

In addition to this is a fabric matting, always used, which is to catch the airborne grease coming up from the cooker. That's the bit for protecting the motor (and ducting) from greasing up.

I have no idea about parts number for either. The matting can be replaced with any generic grease-catching-matting stuff, just cut with scissors to fit.

The carbon filters are screwed together. If I was bothered about them working, I'd open them up, weigh/gauge how much loose "kitty litter" was in them, and buy a bag of activated charcoal pellets. From anywhere that sold them. And reload it.

I wouldn't worry about Hotpoint not supplying them, if you can get around it like that ...

    I can recommend https://cpc.farnell.com/search?st=hotpoint%20charcoal%20filter for spares ...
