Mine includes a portion to pay for social housing Please quote exactly what it says (as do some other council areas) so not everything is paid for by rent.0 -
It should be banned, it's only benefitting those buying and then selling after 5 years at the tax payers expense.
then takes 1 less home for the needy. RTB is for the entitled generation and it should be stopped
Which generation is that? I reckon it’s baby boomers and gen X who are most likely to have used RTB.0 -

I think you would be right about that considering the time scales - by the time it came round to Generation Y, the council housing situation was in disarray and Gen Y struggle to do anything but private rent - Unless they are lucky enough to have a large deposit
I think RTB has it's pros and cons, but it is the young ones of today - who may be been brought up in a house enquired by RTB, who are struggling to even get a rental - brought on by the two generations before
And yet the older ones laughingly call them Snowflakes, without realising life is actually harder for them in many ways
Saying all that, I don't blame anyone for taking advantage of RTB. I do think it should be stopped altogether nowadays but if a family were given the opportunity to own - and get the discount, the problem already exists as it isThe opposite of what you know...is also true0 -
Whereas posters on here inquiring about Right to Buy on their childhood home are devastated about the prospect of losing their childhood home because right to buy doesn't extend to them.0

which shows 3% of council tax going towards "housing and homelessness", not sure that is general day-to-day support for council houses.Norman_Castle wrote: »By law council housing has to be self financing with a separate account, the housing revenue account. I've no idea how the money is spent, whether on repairs, or not.
This is included in my council tax bill info:
"Where does council tax money go?
Council tax contributes to a range of services offered by us. The table below shows these services and how much goes to each service
....spending over £49m on Housing and Public Protection. We are committed to building around 400 homes to rent over the next four years and an increase in shared ownership homes of 20 per annum"0 -

I grew up in a council house
My parents bought it in 1998 from the council using RTB.
My Mum moved into the house in 1969 when she was 11 with my Nan & Grandad, my Mum and Dad still live in it now so didn't buy it just to sell on.
I've never asked why they bought it, but I will do and see what they say.
Even though it will go to me and my brother one day I'd still scrap RTB, I think its had its day now0 -

I wouldn't bank on that. It may have to be sold to pay for the care of one or both of your parents.
Personally I'm ok with that, both as a potential inheritor and the person paying for my care. That's what assets are for.
Edit - just to add that this isn't all hot air talking. My parents have lived in council houses all their lives and decided not to buy any of them. My mother in laws flat was sold years ago when she went into a care home. There will be no inheritance for us and that's ok.0 -

It'll be interesting to know why your parents bought and if they think it should now be scrapped.0
