Buying car to last 15 years?

    Seems reasonable length of time.

I normally buy from Copart and have repaired but salvage prices are crazy at the moment.

So my cars tend to come here to end their days. I'll be 60 next year and I just want a nice car that will last a decent length of time. I don't want the hassle of selling it unless it is to Poland or Nigeria where my last two have ended up. I have a good mechanic that I trust so servicing won't be a problem when I step outside the dealer network.

My dad said that when he hit 60.

He's had three cars since then! It's a ruse to us youngsters!!

Oh to have a 2CV,silly money! Friend had one never bothered to lock it. "No one steals 2CVs!"

Another vote for an Octavia, I sold my last one last year, it was 9 years old and as good as new. I only got rid of it as it was a manual and my left knee is knackered from my rugby days and I wanted an auto. Someone got a bargain deal and I hope they are enjoying it.

I got another Octavia and love it. Both were the vRS model and great fun (if not ideal for mpg but I'm low miles/year).

I plan on keeping this Octavia for a long time, my only concern is the amount of tech in the car, it has all sorts of bells and whistle which I suspect will not last forever.

There's a decent range of Skodas to choose from if the Octavia doesn't work for you. I even had a look at a Karoq but decided I didn't need an SUV.

A word of warning regarding the Volvo V60 D4s.

That may have thrown a spanner in the works.

Looks like post week 46 2017 they were all manufactured with the adblue system which is meant to have sorted the EGR problem.....hmmm.

Will need to give this some more thought.

Damn you lot, might have to look closer at the Skoda but may struggle to get past my prejudice.

Surely you just push the old one further down the croft when the ‘new’ one arrives like all your neighbours? ;)

I had a clear out at the end of last year three were taken away by one wagon ;)

That was a sad day when I decided no more Pandas as the run around.
  • No problem - Skoda Octavia Scout. 3cm increased ride height over the standard Octavia and Haldex 4x4 (Gen 5 which is pretty good if you're not trying to do 'proper off-roading). I bought one in January and it's great. Best all round car I've owned to date. Comfortable, good on fuel, decent enough power/torque for everyday use, lots of toys but not OTT. Skoda main dealer servicing is pretty cheap and it feels well put together. Mine is the DSG which I rather like (just make sure its serviced regularly!). Absolutely LOADS of leg room and boot space and the seats are really good.

Downsides? Halogen headlights on the pre facelift Mk3s aren't great, but the new ones have LED. I don't like the headlight arrangement on the facelift models... and they're a bit more expesive than the standard Octavia.

15 years is no issue for a quality car, properly maintained.
I have a 2004 V70 D5 (Registered in March 2004, so just reached 15 years), which is now on 273k.
I've owned it since it was 3 years old, and have done most of those miles.
Obviously had a few non regular maintenance issues along the way, but otherwise it's been very good, and never let me down.
It's serviced when it asks for it, and an oil/filter change yearly if it doesn't!

As a suggestion, what about the Dacia Duster? The new model has good ground clearance and can come in 4x4 (which it is a capable off roader) and is very different to the old one in terms of quality/looks etc. Its been released with new engines (1.3 Turbos) and has 150BHP (found on high end cars also!).... opt for the 7 year warranty package and that's half your motoring covered under warranty??

If you're not a badge snob then its definately an option? (I personally think the new ones look great).

Umm, you know it's just a facelift of the old one, right?
