Curry’s PCWorld just won’t take no for an answer. Insurance

  • They really are the worst! A few years ago when I went to buy a laptop from Curry's they were trying to sell me all sorts. I only had cash and I was so meek back then and I couldn't say not to this ant-virus. They were trying to sell me insurance and I kept saying no. It was awful. I managed to actually get the anti-virus discounted since I was paying in cash and only had a set amount with me. But they were so pressuring, I was nearly in tears as I hated saying no to people. They were down right rude in the end. They also tried to sell me a "set up fee" of £10! £10 to do what?! All you have to do is turn it on and read the instructions. They are awful. I vowed never to buy from them again.

Many years ago, I was sacked from Curry’s because I refused to fleece the pensioners of my town with unneeded insurance and add-ons.

The training for this selling was all about how to con the customer into thinking they needed this cover - taking them on a journey of possible events where they’d damage or lose their purchase.

In part, I’m not surprised - I saw the margin on most big box items and it was literally pennies per £10. But I still believe the hard-sell was too much.

TBH now that they have free delivery which can occur even faster than amazon (23:00 purchase, 09:00 delivery for example), why would anyone go into the stores other than to see what you might want to order online?

They can smell the people who might be pursuaded though! I bought a laptop from them (was best price around) and paid online for collection (I was going to be around and it saved the at the time expensive and slow deliver), they only asked me about insurance once and I think the look I gave told them everything they need to know.

Not their fault though, !!!!!! job and they have to do this, but one firm no should tell them all the need to know.

Last time I was in PC-world I said "look, if you mention the insurance one more time I am walking out and buying this elsewhere."

    She did.

    So I did.

They wanted £5.99 a month to "insure" something that was only costing me £80. I could (and do) put that in a regular saver and then I have an absolute cast-iron no quibble warranty scheme - it's called savings, if I break it, I ask myself to provide a like for like cover and I do in as much time as it takes me to get to the shop. And I didn't have to bribe myself with a free TV bracket (whatever the heck that is).
(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)
  • Personally, I'd think twice before complaining about this.

Curry's will probably see it as positive feedback...

One of their salesman has succeeded in selling insurance on a purchase where the OP made it perfectly clear that he and his wife didn't want it.

That man will be salesman of the month!

We were looking at buying fridges and such for our new flat and the single cast iron rule I had for buying them is that I wouldn't give Curry's a single goddamn penny.

This sort of thread is exactly why.

Had to purchase a new TV after my trustee Samsung I bough in 2007 blew its power input pcb board.

After searching amazon and Argos, John Lewis for a specific tv, me and my wife and kids know well and we like, we looked for an LG the one we wanted only had stock in our local Curry’s PC world it just so happened to be the cheapest, I loath curry’s, I specifically hate this branch they tend to be heavy handed with sales of insurance and extra’s.

We walked in store after the drive down, seen it in stock and display tv had a fiddle with, Got jumped on by staff but as we knew we wanted this model asked for it, as they do, once they have the tv out for you, they get you by those satellite instore tills that only take card payments, he asked my wife (the purchaser who has the money) did she want cover for any type of imaginable scenario deliberate or accidental insurance cover for £5.99 per month? As I was in a good mood I politely declined and my wife agreed with me that we did not need insurance, here came the hard sell, went through his sales pitch speil about how nothing will compare to this insurance it one of a kind and no excess to pay and claim as many times as you want, said I could take a hammer to it purposefully and still cover it, I said no thanks and gave him the “I’m losing my patience look” he said I’ll add it anyway and if you change your mind you can ring the number on the top of the receipt and cancel at anytime, I specifically told him No you will remove it I’m not paying it and he did.

Now normally after “the look” if they persist I normally just get out and say sorry hard sales loses sales, my wife is also the type to not decline anything or question things as she is shy and don’t like to say no.

We had to go the tills at the front of the store to pay cash, I went to the car to put the seats down in the back ready to accept the tv, being disabled it takes me a bit longer to achieve this by the time I got back inside my wife had paid, he even threw in for free a tv wall bracket worth £15.00, I thought wow, then this quickly followed by a burst of anger, he follows up with I have added the insurance for you (using our details from a previous purchase where we had the item delivered) and have paid for the first month upfront for you too, with a smile, I thought about demanding a full refund, but I just said that wasn’t needed nor wanted and as he was the manager I thought pointless in asking for one.

Will be on the phone tomorrow now to pc world and insurance company to stop the cover and make a complaint but could have done without the hassle.

Curry's 8 miles from home - John Lewis 30 miles from home- Richersounds store 32 miles from home. fuel saved very :money:by shopping at curry's,

Wanted tv same day as if you had read the thread which helps, wanted to stop WWIII in the house.

Wanted a Specific model TV LG 50UK6470PLC Guess who only stocks it for same day! https://www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-50UK6470PLC according to LG website stockist list.

The brother version to this tv https://www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-50UK6470PLD is more expensive by average of £30.00 that I saved buying the sister TV very :money:.

As this is a Moneysaving saving site look how much I saved in currys compared to Amazon! LG's own sale site https://www.amazon.co.uk/LED-LG-50UK6470PLC-3840X2160-ASSISTANT-black/dp/B07CLG55ZK/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_2?keywords=LG+50UK6470PLC&qid=1553683881&s=gateway&sr=8-2-fkmrnull.
I don't have prime so would have to pay the postage too!

    NOW THATS :money:!

That'll be me "explaining how brexit works" I suppose, since I bought a new hard drive to replace the failing one in our PC and they came up as the cheapest I found with stock available to collect (which I was able to do the next day since I'd already booked a day off work).

And to add to the OP's issues, do Currys PC World still do that thing where they use a special model number on electrical items that only exists for their stock systems so it's harder to do the price match?

Or did someone in regulator world finally wake up and give them a good kick in the bottom for that one?
