Help with insurance cancelation

A few days ago driving from work a van hit my car from behind . I obviously reported this to my insurance company . What I did not realise was that my policy was social only and did not include commuting . As soon as I realised this I amended my policy to commuting and paid the admin charge to Go Skippy . A day later Go Skippy sent me an email stating that The underwriters had cancelled my policy because they felt they could not provide cover without risk to them . Can they do this even after an amendment and admin charge?

Your insurer can cancel at any time (just as you can!). This will all be covered by the policy conditions.

But as you have said, you were driving uninsured at the time of your incident, so expect any claim you make against your policy to be rejected.

If liability is clear cut as you say then make your claim against the third party insurer or consider using a claim handler to deal with this for you

Would this type of cancelation need to be declared on future quotes / policies?

    Yes

(Assuming that the cancellation follows the OP being caught driving whilst uninsured)

This was a non fault accident on my part as admitted by the other driver . Does anyone think it would be worth my making against the other driver for damages to my car and injury .

    See #2 above

You can pursue the third party insurer.

Consider using a claim handler to pursue your repair costs/injury compensation/ other losses as a result of the incident

How do I find a claim handler ? Are there any recommendations ? Sorry I am really clueless when it comes to this sort of thing .I presume that it is pointless doing this myself ?
Many thanks for the response to this thread.

I think the claim is the least of your problems which you can proceed via the third part insurance.

You now have to declare a cancelled insurance which will hit your premiums high or make it difficult to find insurance of any kind. Good luck, that mistake is going to cost you dear

To play Devil's Advocate here - what would happen if the van driver claimed against you because he hit an uninsured driver who should not have been driving uninsured and therefore should not have been on the road in the first place?

    Could happen.

No, your insurers have an overiding obligation to treat your failry anf cannot simply cancel the policy unilatteraly simply because you made a claim and refuse to deal with the claim. They can cancel a policy if you failed to make a declaration when taking out the policy under certain circumstances. Making a genuine error for which they are under normal circumstances prepared to take on the risk - which they had done - for an additional premium implies that the action they have taken is "unfair". Their correct remedy was to make an additional charge from the day you reported the accident, but to scale back the claim by the percentage of underpaid premium.

I suggest you firstly make a complaint stating that your mistike was genuine, because you had believed that motor uinsurance generally and normalyly included commuting to and from work. Further remind them that they were happy to accept the risk for an additional premium. State that you believe that the subsequent "change of mind" was unfair. If they fail to agree take it to the ombudsman that has in previous similar situations found for the insured rather than insurer.

This is simply my opinion based on my understanding of your OP . Good luck.
