If you are only paying £25 for your MoT's, then thats why you are getting silly failures; they hope to make the money up on repairs. Take it somewhere decent and pay the full MoT price; then you will most likely pass. I gave up cheap MoT's as bad value years ago.

It will be one of those 'in - out' MOT centres, very poor.
  • Hang on, a safety related component (brake disc) is significantly below the recommended minimum, and you want to see if you can have it passed at another garage?

Goodness me. It's obviously worn and needs replacing - just get it done. Don't skimp when it comes to braking!
Sidenote, your pads may be 'fine' but they'll be worn by some degree too. New pads means you'll have longer before they need changing again.

Just out of interest, are you the sort of person that waits until tyres have cords showing to change?

Anyway, fail on front disk, 1.5 mm below legal limit, of course pads will have to be done as well even though they are fine
Discs generally have a "new" thickness and a recommended minimum thickness but I am not aware of any legal limit. Just looked at the discs on one of cars and the figures are:

    front new 22.0mm min 20.4 difference 1.6mm
    rear new 12mm min 10.4 difference 1.6mm
If either of these discs were 1.5mm below the minimum the discs would probably have warped by now.

To measure accurately you really need to remove the wheel and measure the thickness at say 8 points around the circumference to check if the disc is near to the minimum. Some vented discs have a notch cut to indicate the minimum thickness

Are you sure they didn't mean brake PADS worn below the limit (which is 1.5mm)?

    Thanks everyone for replies.

The MOT fail diddnt actually state a measurement so I asked why not and he got the engineer to come.

He said its a judgement not a measurement but because it was in for a oil service as well, he borderline failed the disks for wear on MOT and then measured as part of the service to confirm they are below the manufactures recommended width, not the legal width.

He showed me notes 20.4 recommended, looked like 19.45 actual. Similar on back but they passed MOT he said he gave me the benefit of the doubt for them on MOT.

He wouldn't let me have the sheet with measurements so I grabbed it and took a photo...it obviously went a bit weird then as they thought I diddnt trust them.

Service report says front and back disks and pads need replacing. Computer says front pads have 22k miles left and back have 40k miles left. MOT says two headlamps needed, computer says 1 sidelight is needed. Service says Brake fluid needed, computers says brake fluid needed in Nov 2020. Computer says nothing about disks needed ?

I have it booked into another garage for a second opinion.

No I'm pretty good on tyres, easy to check and see when needed. Disk thickness and condition seems a little bit more difficulty to check regularly and confirm not being mis-sold though... how do you do this ?

I personally think that is an under estimation.

You would change below that ? I would think its like sell by dates, safe to eat for awhile after the recommended. If its dangerous they would under estimate by a large degree

Its 83,000k & I have had from new, brakes feel awesome, very responsive to the slightest touch and have close to emergency stopped a couple times with no issue so I'm thinking probably good for one more year / 100K ?

Sod "computer says". LOOK AT THE THINGS.

They're clearly badly worn. They're a consumable. Don't argue, just replace them.

When was the brake fluid last changed?

Are you expecting the discs to suddenly get thicker between now and then!?

Regardless of the fact they are looking to upsell you a set of pads and discs off the back of the MOT your car failed due to excessive disc wear. Just get them changed!

    Theoretically...

If this were Halfords/Kwikfit/etc where the MOT was done, would you guys agree with the OP's decision to get a second opinion?

I'm certainly not in disagreement that if they do need doing then they should be done - but surely there's a lesson here in that if you don't trust this garage (whether that's the quality of their work or their honesty) then you don't take your car there.
