Has anyone been to Borneo?

We flew to Kuala Lumpur and had 3 days there before flying to Borneo where we did a short tour including a visit to a longhouse and then we flew to Kota Kinabalu where we stayed at the Rasa Ria which was an orangutan Orphanage at the time (sadly no longer). We also had a trip to Sepilok to the Orangutan sanctuary there but that was nowhere near as good as the Rasa Ria.
Very enjoyable holiday though although as Slinga says unless you're going for the Orangutans or the Longhouse there's not a great deal else.0 -
I really don't see the point in asking about prices five years ahead of schedule but besides that I've had a couple of friends go there a while ago and they had a great time.
A work colleague went solely to Brunei for a fortnight last year and she said that it was a great place with plenty to do (although considering its size I'm not sure how true that was).0 -

Two weeks is a long time in Brunei without a good plan, and insider assistance.
Not many pubs.....none at all infact. Best to read up on the Local Laws and Customs before committing too...

Like I said earlier, Saudi Arabia with a smile. But I reckon it's worth a trip for a couple of full days, and to use it as a gateway into Borneo just for the hydrofoil experience on the South China Sea.0 -
We went 20 years ago but I found the old emails from our itinerary! We were en route from Australia (where we'd been living for 3 years) back to the UK.
After a couple of days in Kuala Lumpur, we flew into Kota Kinabalu. We had to overnight there before flying onto Sandakan. From Sandakan we visited the orangutan sanctuary at Sepilok. We then headed to Sukau and did river cruises where amongst other things we saw wild proboscis monkeys, gibbons and elephants and then onto the Danum Valley. We did lots of rainforest walks there - I definitely recall being leeched! We also saw wild orangutans there, but very distant and very high up in the forest canopy.
We then had to return to Kota Kinabalu for a night before flying to Tawau from where we transferred to Sipidan Island (no longer possible to stay on the island) and spent a few days diving some of the most spectacular diving spots I've ever seen as a diver.
I'd love to return!0 -
I'm veggie. We went 2 years ago - flew to Kuala Lumpur and had a few days there - loved it and absolutely no issue with food here.
We then flew to Kota Kinabalu where we stayed for a week and during that time we did a trip to Sepilok to see orangutans. This was amazing and we loved the trip - we actually wished we'd spent longer here seeing more wildlife - we saw the orangutans in the sanctuary and then did a tour where we were lucky to see one in the wild. We would have loved a few more days here though.
We struggled with food in Kota Kinabalu - the hotel just did not understand vegetarian so went hungry first day! Eventually found some lovely local restaurants that did delicious veggie food (but no beer!! which totally understandable - but just highlighting)
But if you're not going for 5 years I wouldn't worry now - things change and move on - plus gives you plenty of time to learn some local language to explain your dietary requirements0
