Has anyone been to Borneo?

My mother and I are planning a trip to Borneo in 5 years time, has anyone been? What were the flights/flight prices like?

I wouldn't even start to worry about it until 2022 at the very earliest, in 5 years so much can change that anything you plan now is very likely to be completely out of date.

I've worked in Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei and on Labuan.
Interesting and friendly people unless you get on the wrong side of Dyaks or Ibans and that is something you don't want to do.

Unless you like orangutans or want to visit a Longhouse and drink Tuak I'd say there wasn't much to do except lay on a beach and in many areas the beaches aren't great.

    Food's not bad.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

We went to Sarawak a few years back, oh that rhymes :D I booked 2 separate hotels, & flights on ebookers. Sorry I can't remember how much they cost, but it was one of my cheaper holidays. My hotel did a free transfer from the airport, & I booked trips with a driver from off the TripAdvisor forum, £24 for a day ain't bad eh? Although the prices may have risen a bit now.

    You'll have a great time!

Going in June/July for 3 weeks with trailfinders on semi private tour. Focusing on wildlife and staying in mostly lodges.

Didn't book until about 3 weeks ago so wouldn't be worrying yet!!

Tend to agree with Slinga [#3] about things to do.

Flew to and from Brunei with Royal Brunei Airways. Okay, but dry.

Couple of days in Brunei....Saudi Arabia with a smile!

Then hydrofoil to Kota Kinabalu, via Labuan.

Kota Kinabalu [Sabah] itself hasn't got a lot to recommend it.

Short flight to Kuching [Sarawak]. Quite enjoyed Kuching, and the surrounding area.

    Flight back to KK.

Hydrofoil back to Brunei via Labuan.

    Royal Brunei home.

Haha that's why we're going! They're my mum's favourite animal, it's on her bucket list!

    Wow! Have a great time!
Yes we are going for the wildlife as well! Are they self catering lodges? I'm worried about our food situation as I'm vegan and my mum is a coeliac! :o

We got a local bus from Kuching to an Orangutan Sanctuary, where the animals were in the semi-wild.

We joined a free [donations welcomes] guided tour, but without any guarantee of seeing the animals, and we'd almost given up. But a family appeared, and they were amazing.

I've got a scrap book, so I'll find out the details, and post.

Bako National Park is a must-visit...

...got there by bus, and then speedboat.

    Also The Sarawak Cultural Village....

Easy to get there by public bus too.

we aren't self catering, not sure how you'd get on with your dietary needs. Once you've researched where you'd like to stay, just give them an email and ask .

Like others have said, food fantastic and so cheap. Went to Borneo about 15 years ago and never went hungry!!
