Can't believe posts 2 & 4, the OP needs help not criticism ...

Totally agree with you, we were shocked and horrified to read such responses too.
Some people need to take a hard look at themselves. If they were speaking like that in a pub face to face, rather than from behind the remotre safety of their keyboard, then ... well you can join the dots.

The mods really should enforce the rule of being nice to other moneysavers here. Or did I see the mod resigned recently, and MSE is looking to hire another?

OP - sorry, I can't really assist you. But I feel your pain and hope you get your unfortunate situation sorted shortly. Hopefully some of the more helpful posts by others here will put you on the right path...

I hope that now the OP has explained the circumstances more clearly, that those who condemned her actions will be more sympathetic.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, that not too many of us mere mortals are blessed with.

A distinct lack of sympathy appears to have been forthcoming from those who should know better. They should not have made such caustic comments in the first place, if you ask me.

Sympathetic replies will not help the OP, a good example is that you have posted twice but haven't provided any information that will help the OP in their situation.

After I stopped paying they sent my debt to high court. We came to an agreement me paying £50 a month.

3 months later the water company sends me a letter saying I've been charged for the incorrect meter and I contact them to get an local inspector to come and get right meter serial number.

So yes , I was right all along and got the correct ✔ water serial meter number. What bugs me was that they could have sorted it out a long time ago, but they didn't.

So I stopped paying for my neighbors water usage and that's when bailifss came in the picture.

The problem is that you didn't simply "stop paying for your neighbors water usage" . You stopped paying an amount you agreed in court to pay without contacting anyone first. You must have realised this was the wrong thing to do?

So what you need to do now is contact South East Water to try and sort this out like you should have months ago.

The OP let this issue go on way too long and should have never let it go to court, never mind the high court!.

When i last moved house i took an opening meter reading from my water meter and then took regular readings to keep an eye on my usage. I noticed that my water usage was a bit high so i got someone to turn a tap on and off to check my meter was operating correctly. If it was the wrong meter on my account i would have noticed right away and could have got the water company to correct it on their system. It turns out it was a leaking toilet flush which i then fixed.

If the OP had done any of these basic checks when they got a large bill instead of simply not paying it all would have been sorted before any court action. This certainly doesn't require Hindsight.

The point here is that it's South East Water that are equally to blame. The OP reported the high usage, but SE Water did nothing about it.

I agree that the OP should have not stopped payment (something they admit to getting wrong) but the problem started with SE Water in the first place.

Yes the problem certainly originated with South East Water so i'm not saying they aren't to blame as well, but sometimes when a company doesn't investigate a problem like they should you need to do as much as you can yourself and push them into resolving it.

The OP suspected it was either a leak or incorrect meter and if they had just taken 5 minutes to check themselves the problem would have been resolved before court.

So the moral of the story is spending time checking things yourself is always worth it even if it's not really your job because it can save you a lot of hassle in the future.

So anyone reading this who doesn't read their own meters (Gas, Electric and Water) at least monthly go and start right away!.

Yes, I stopped paying foolishly. But I knew something wasn't right and I didn't get any explanation of why my water usage was so massive.

A lot of people on these energy boards work for the utilities and water companies and are never sympathetic always putting the blame on the householder , never on the useless company getting everything wrong. Glad you called them out on it.

Don't know if it's too late for a setaside application but you need to see a solicitor about this and enquire/ask about getting the judgement set aside/appealed - probably appealed - on the grounds that

    a) it was not your debt in the first pace (or most of it was nnot) and it was disputed, and

    b) further evidence from the water company proves their mistake.

You must consult a solicitor and get things moving and also ask about reclaiming costs for your action and recovery of any monies paid and also ask for compensation for the stress and mess they have caused.

    That's what I would do.
